Most Frequently Asked Questions About Foam Flooring
Why is my foam tile flooring bubbling up and how do I fix it?
The most common cause of foam flooring bubbling up or expanding is an environment with high heat or humidity. In order to prevent this from happening, be sure to leave room around the perimeter of the flooring when you install it. Leaving some space between the floor and the wall allows the floor to expand without bubbling up.
How do I fix a foam mat with a hole?
Foam mats are generally not repairable, and the mat will need to be replaced. This is most frequently true when your flooring is made of EVA or PE foam. If you have foam tiles, you may be able to flip a reversible tile over, using the other side, rather than replacing the tile.
How much is a foam floor?
The exact cost of your foam floor will depend on a number of factors, including the style and type of foam that you use, and the size of the area that you need to cover. Greatmats stocks a wide range of foam to accommodate all budgets. You can choose from products that cost as little as 99 cents per square foot, or opt for our premiere products that cost more than $32 per square foot. With a wide range of choices, you'll have plenty of options for any flooring project.
How big are square foam mats?
Square foam mats usually measure either 2x2 feet or 1x1 meters in size.
Why People Prefer Foam Flooring
Foam flooring is a popular option for kids' play rooms, basements, cheerleading practice areas, and more. Its convenience, durability, and affordability are top qualities that just can't be beat.
Above all else, foam flooring is a convenient option. Foam flooring is lightweight, which makes it easy to transport and install. Foam tiles are also conveniently sized, so navigating narrow halls or stairways is easy. One person can handle the entire installation, from carrying in the flooring to installing and cutting it to fit.
But foam flooring offers other benefits that make it a convenient and practical option, too. Foam helps to insulate spaces against temperature fluctuations and sounds. It also helps to absorb shock, making for a more comfortable flooring.
It's these qualities that make foam a great option for use in combat sports and cheerleading practice areas. Foam is also suitable for use in homes, and it's especially popular for kids' rooms and playrooms.
While foam flooring is certainly lightweight, it's also highly durable. All of our foam floor tiles are made of waterproof, closed cell foams, which makes for a durable product. Some foam mats have polyurethane foam cores, and these cores are wrapped with durable vinyl exteriors for maximum strength. The design makes the mats easy to clean and disinfect, while also ensuring their covers are strong enough to hold up to rigorous use.
Since foam floor tiles are waterproof, spills can be easily cleaned, which is a major advantage when using these products in kids' play areas.
We also offer foam flooring mats which feature a cross-linked polyethylene foam base. The base is highly durable, and these mats are available with either vinyl or carpet surfaces.
Foam flooring is highly affordable, and we have foam products available for under $1 to accommodate virtually any budget. If you're looking for an affordable option for a large application, or need something convenient that will be used in a small room in your home, we're sure to have a product to suit your needs, affordably.
Greatmats is the place to shop for foam flooring tiles and mats. We have over 80 foam products for you to choose from, including options for home, commercial, and athletic use. Choose from a wide assortment of puzzle mats and tiles, glue-down or peel-and-stick foam tiles, roll-out foam mats, folding gym mats, and foam underlayment rolls.

Athletic Foam Floor Tiles
Benefits of Foam for Athletic Flooring
- Excellent shock and impact absorption
- Durable enough to withstand rigorous use
- High density options can withstand the weight of workout equipment
- Easy installation, and portable options are available
Striking arts, such as Karate, Taekwondo, and boxing, require a flooring that blends together stability and shock absorption. Foam floor tiles offer that specialized blend with the stability athletes need to stay balanced and the cushion and shock absorption to make for safer landings. Foam tiles are available in a variety of surfaces that control how much grip an athlete will have. Some tiles can be used with bare feet, while others are strong enough for use with shoes and boots. Most foam tiles intended for use with the striking arts usually measure between 7/8 and 1 inch thick.
When choosing a flooring for use with throwing arts, like judo, you'll need something that offers even more shock absorption. Our thicker foam mats and tiles are suitable for the job. Starting at 1-1/4 inch thick, these mats can absorb impact, but also offer critical fall height protection, which means increased safety for athletes. Foam puzzle mats are available in thicknesses up to 1-5/8 inch thick. For maximized shock absorption, consider our vinyl and denim covered foam mats which are much thicker - some even measure up to 12 inches thick.
Worried about skin burns resulting from impact with the flooring? We have solutions for that, too. We have a selection of mats that have no-burn surfaces to help avoid friction-induced skin burns. They're suitable for use with grappling arts, like wrestling or Jiu Jitsu, and are popular in professional BJJ gyms, as well as in amateur grappling tournament circuit rings.
For aerobic studios, our interlocking foam tiles make an excellent choice. These tiles are textured and are designed to withstand the punishing, repetitive nature of aerobics training. Foam flooring also helps to reduce body fatigue, meaning your aerobics workout can last longer, so you get more out of each session.
For yoga studios, a comfortable flooring is a must. Our softer, more forgiving foam mats are a popular choice, as they relieve pressure on your joints. They also challenge your balance while simultaneously offering anti-fatigue benefits. These mats have everything you need for an enjoyable and safe yoga session.
High Density Options
Before you choose a flooring for your gym, it's important to consider that typical foam flooring can be damaged by heavy gym equipment. If you need something strong enough to pair with heavy gym equipment, then consider our super high density EVA foam mats. The high-density foam is specifically made to withstand the higher weights without becoming indented or being damaged. They're a good option for home gyms, but are strong enough to be used as portable horse stall flooring, too.
Any cheerleading facility will need a flooring that offers superior impact absorption and rebound. Our specially designed foam mats offer these very properties, helping to improve the safety of your athletes. Choose from carpet or vinyl surfaces that maximize traction while improving athletic performance.
When it comes to outfitting your gymnastics facility, you can find a variety of suitable foam floor mats at Greatmats. Foam floor mats offer excellent shock absorption and cushion to help keep gymnasts safe. These mats are designed for use with activities including tumbling, stretching, skill training, and landings. Choose from a large selection of rollout mats, folding mats, octagon mats, and wedge shaped mats.
If you're creating a workout space in your own home, we have many foam options available. Foam tiles are easy to transport and install, with no adhesive needed. You can easily pull up the tiles and transport them if you ever need to relocate or remove the flooring in the future.
In addition to foam tiles, our lightweight roll-out personal exercise mats are also useful for home workouts. You can store the mats in small spaces, rolling them out only when you need them. They'll add cushion to any existing flooring, and can be used to temporarily convert any area into your home gym.
Temporary Flooring Options
If you need to temporarily add cushion or comfort to flooring, our folding gym mats make a practical solution for larger gyms. Many of these mats have connector strips so you can combine them into larger surfaces. After your practice or workout, just separate the mats, fold them up, and store them away. These mats can make any area in your gym more versatile.
Our carpet topped rollout mats are another popular option. These mats also have hook-and-loop connector tape so you can secure multiple mats together for a larger surface. The hook and loop closures create a secure connection that won't pull apart during a workout. Some of our larger foam mats also have a non-skid bottom to prevent them from shifting or separating.
Foam flooring is a favorite for gyms and workout spaces, thanks to its cushion, convenience, and versatility.
Kids' Foam Floor Tiles
Benefits of Foam For Kids' Areas
- Soft and forgiving, foam can transform hard surfaces into kid-friendly areas
- Some foam products offer fall height ratings for increased safety and injury prevention
- Easy cleanup, so spills are no big deal
- Noise buffering and sound dampening properties make for a more enjoyable environment for everyone
But foam doesn't just keep kids safe. It helps to buffer noise, so it can help to minimize the sound volume in your house when the kids are playing. Foam also insulates the room against the cold, so if you're installing a play area in the basement, foam flooring can keep the space warmer and more comfortable in the winter.
There's also no beating foam playroom flooring when it comes to easy installation. There's no adhesive needed for installation, so you can change things up and create a design as you go. This also means you can pull up the floor and relocate it, if needed. Just line up the tile edges and push down on the seams to piece the tiles together, like a puzzle. Installation is so easy that kids can even help out.
Our Premium 5/8-inch Foam Floor Mat is the most popular foam tile for kids' rooms. These tiles are available in 15 brilliant colors, so you can create a room with a fun pattern or design. These tiles are affordable and easy to clean. If spills happen, you can just use a damp mop or sweep the tiles as needed. Since the tiles are waterproof and stain resistant, they'll continue to look great and can withstand the heavy wear and tear of use in a kids' room. Lead and latex free, these foam floor tiles can help to create a safe environment for your child.
Foam Trade Show Booth Flooring
Benefits of Foam for Trade Show Flooring
- Lightweight, foam tiles are portable and installation takes just minutes
- Durable enough to hold up from show after show
- Anti-fatigue benefits help to keep comfort up and stress levels down
- Waterproof and easy to clean, your flooring will continue to look great
Foam floors tiles create a comfortable, forgiving surface that makes your booth welcoming, encouraging clients to spend time in the booth. The anti-fatigue benefits of foam helps to reduce stress, increase productivity, and even prevent injuries.
These tiles are available in a wide range of colors and patterns. Whether you're looking for something bold or reserved, or even if you want a flooring that imitates the look of wood flooring, these tiles are a practical option. Set your business aside by creating a distinctive aesthetic that is immediately identifiable as belonging to your company or brand.
Our 2x2 foot interlocking tiles are a highly popular choice when it comes to trade show flooring. These tiles are durable yet lightweight, and are available in eye-catching wood grain pattern finishes. They can be shipped via ground service from show to show, and install quickly and easily. Waterproof and easy to clean, these tiles offer a great performance.
Foam Flooring for Basements
Benefits of Foam for Basements
- Insulation properties of foam keep your floor warm, stopping cold concrete from penetrating up into the flooring
- Non-absorbent foam will not be damaged by moisture
- Tiles can be pulled up and dried out in the event of a leak
Foam is highly popular for use in basements because it is easily removable. If your basement has moisture problems, or if there's ever a flood, you can simply remove the tiles to dry out the subfloor. Foam won't absorb moisture or be damaged, so you don't have to worry about leaks possibly destroying your flooring.
Foam can be indented by heavy weights, so it's best to use plastic coasters under the legs of heavy furniture like couches and chairs. Foam indentations usually will heal themselves over time, but if a heavy object is left on the flooring for an extended period of time, the indentations may become permanent.
Foam Floor Tiles for Horse Trailers and Stalls
Benefits of Foam for Horse Trailers and Stalls
- High density foam can handle the weight of horses while remaining lightweight and easily portable
- Excellent cushion maximizes your horse's comfort and health
- Solid surface makes for easy stall cleaning when you're away from home
- Lightweight design means you can move these mats without assistance, ideal for anyone who travels alone
Rubber stall mats are heavy and dense, yet also highly durable. However, they're only suitable for long-term use, because they're so difficult to move. Interlocking foam mats are designed to be portable, making them a great solution for horse shows, clinics, and trail rides.
You can install these foam mats in your trailer, then pull them out when you've arrived at your destination to double as stall flooring. Reverse the process when you're heading home. There's no worrying about finding someone to help you lug heavy stall mats around, and you can provide your horse with a comfortable, safe, and forgiving surface even when you're away from home.
Foam Pool Decking Tiles
Benefits of Foam for Pool Decking
- Excellent traction and slip resistance creates a safe surface
- Forgiving surface is ASTM fall height rated, essential for a high-risk area
- Suitable for both indoor and outdoor installations
Foam pool decking tiles can be used both indoors and outdoors. The peel-and-stick installation method makes indoor installations easy and fast, while outdoor installations require adhesive. Foam pool decking tiles are often used for hotel and school pool areas, as well as municipal pools and waterparks.

Foam Surface Textures
You'll find that foam tiles are available with many different surface textures. Each surface texture offers different advantages:
- Thatch textured tiles are most resistant to footwear.
- Non-burn tatami textured tiles won't burn bare skin.
- Leather textured tiles are meant to be used under bare feet.
- Vinyl wrapped or vinyl-bonded foam tiles hold up very well to footwear. Some of these tiles have a smooth surface, while others have a tatami surface for extra traction. It's important to note that the vinyl tatami-textured surface will not prevent skin burns, unlike the non-burn tatami tiles.
- Pebble top textures create a non-slip surface on super high-density foam tiles.
- Felt grip tops provide the proper amount of traction and comfort for dogs' paws.
- Some tiles and roll out mats feature carpeted tops. On rollout mats, carpeted tops create extra rebound.
- Some foam anti-fatigue mats are available with diamond surface finishes.
No matter what type of finish you're looking for, we're sure to have a foam tile that offers it.
Foam Tile Colors
At Greatmats, we stock interlocking foam mats in a whole rainbow of colors. You can choose from brilliant colors to muted tones to wood grain designer patterns that will complement any decor. There are certainly plenty of options here!
The Foam Floor Mats 5/8 Premium tiles are available in a selection of 15 beautiful colors. Our interlocking foam floor mats come in several different wood grain and cork patterns. Many interlocking athletic and martial arts tiles are reversible, and come with different colors on each side, allowing you to create fun patterns.
Size and Thickness
The use of your space and your specific project will determine the ideal size and thickness for your foam tiles. We carry interlocking foam tiles ranging from 3/8 to 1-5/8 inches thick, so we have something that will work for any project.
Our most common foam tiles measure 2x2 feet and 1x1 meter. The larger tiles are intended for commercial installations and professional studios, since they cover larger areas while minimizing the amount of seams in the finished flooring. The smaller 2x2 foot tiles are designed more for residential applications. They're more convenient to transport, and are easy to fit into smaller areas.
The 2x2 foot sized mats can ship via ground service, so they'll arrive at your door via UPS or FedEx. Our 1x1 meter tiles always ship on a pallet via a freight delivery service.
For larger areas, roll-out foam flooring allows for faster installation. Our roll-out flooring is available in sizes as small as a 5x10 foot roll, all the way up to 6 feet wide with custom lengths.
Hardness and Density
Foam varies in both hardness and density, so it's important to pay attention to both of these features when choosing a product that's right for your project.
Foam's 'hardness' is measured in a degree of Shore C, which refers to how hard or soft the foam feels to the touch. This is measured with a measurement tool called a hardness durometer. The higher the rating, the harder the foam feels. Our 2x2 feet by 5/8 inch thick tiles measure between 30 and 35 Shore C. Our hardest tiles have a hardness of 60 to 65 degrees Shore C.
We also offer softer foam floor mats which have undergone egg drop tests. Some of the eggs survived falls of up to 68 feet onto the mats below. These soft mats cushioned the eggs' landing, so the eggs bounced, rather than breaking.
Density is different than hardness, and measures the material's mass in comparison to its weight. It specifies the ratio of the amount of material to air in a tile. Both hardness and density relate to the quality of the foam flooring.
Foam flooring acts as an insulating layer when placed on top of concrete or wood. It's a great benefit when you're using foam in an area like a basement, since the foam flooring will feel as warm as the room temperature, rather than the cold floor beneath it.
Even if you have in-floor heat, you can still use foam flooring. Foam tiles won't inhibit the heat from traveling up into the room, so the in-floor heat will still be functional. Foam can be used on top of concrete with in-floor heating, since foam's R-value is minimal.
Foam Tile Pricing
You'll find that the pricing of foam flooring is affected by its size, its versatility, and construction materials. The most economical foam options are thinner than the higher priced products. When working with the lowest-priced products, you'll usually have fewer choices in terms of their uses and installation methods.
Our 5/8-inch thick foam rolls without a finished surface are highly affordable, coming in at under $1 per square foot. Our 1/2-inch-thick puzzle mats with limited color options are also within this price range.
If you increase the price range a bit, you can choose from our reversible, wood-grain patterned and numerous color-option interlocking foam floor tiles. Extra thickness and additional surface textures also enter the picture. At less than $2 per square foot, you'll find puzzle mats up to 1 inch thick. You can also choose tiles with tatami, leather, pebble, felt, or smooth surface textures. Other options, including varying hardness and tiles measuring up to 1x1 meter in size are also available at this price point.
In the $3 per square foot range, your thickness options increase to 1-5/8 inches. The mat sizes also increase exponentially, and roll-out carpet tile mats become available. Carpet topped foam floor tiles are also an option.
Moving up into the $4 per square foot price mark means that you can choose vinyl topped roll out mats. At the $5 per square foot point you start to see folding mats and heavy-duty 1x2 meter vinyl wrapped foam floor tiles. The $6 per square foot mark introduces options such as the padded athletic vinyl rolls for athletic courts.
Outdoor pool decking, crash pads, stage mats, and personal exercise mats come in past the $6 per square foot mark.
Foam Flooring Installation and Maintenance
Installing foam floor tiles is an easy and simple process that can make for a fun DIY project. The tiles fit together like puzzle pieces, so all you have to do is lay them out and fit them together. If you're performing a wall-to-wall installation or need to install the tiles around objects, like poles, you can cut the tiles to fit using a sharp utility knife.
Always lay a board below the foam when cutting to prevent the cuts from damaging your subfloor. Use a sharp utility knife. If the tiles start to fray as you cut, you need to install a new blade.
How To Clean Foam Floor TilesOne reason that foam floor tiles are so popular is because they are easy to clean. Spills and dirt are no big deal, because they can be wiped or swept away, so these tiles are a great choice for kids play areas. Cleaning foam is easy.
- Vacuum the floor using a non-power head vacuum.
- Mop the floor with a damp mop, hot water, and household floor cleaner.
- Use a sponge and scrubby for any necessary spot cleaning.
- Clean large areas with a walk behind auto cleaning machine.
- Allow the floor to dry.
Don't forget to use the Greatmats Online Pro Floor Planner as you plan out your project. This online tool can help you to determine just how much flooring you need to purchase for your project. You can even lay out your room to see how it will look with the new flooring. The Online Pro Floor Planner helps to minimize the amount of wasted material, saving you money at the same time.
