Athletic Foam Floor Tiles

Benefits of Foam for Athletic Flooring
- Excellent shock and impact absorption
- Durable enough to withstand rigorous use
- High density options can withstand the weight of workout equipment
- Easy installation, and portable options are available

Foam floor tiles are a popular option for home and commercial athletic training facilities, thanks to the cushion and impact absorption that foam provides.

Consider foam floor tiles for use such as, home gyms, martial arts flooring, aerobic studios, boxing gym floors.

For striking arts, such as Karate, Taekwondo, or boxing, foam floor tiles provide stability for balance, cushion for landings, and surfaces that control how much slippage is allowed. Some foam tiles are designed for use with bare feet, while others are strong enough to withstand the wear and tear of shoes and boots. These foam floor tiles are usually 7/8 to 1 inch thick.

For throwing arts, such as judo, choose from our thicker foam floor mats and tiles, starting at 1 1/4 inch thick. These thicker mats absorb impact and also provide critical fall height protection - some up to 4 feet. Foam puzzle mats can be as thick as 1-5/8 inch, while vinyl or denim covered foam mats can be much thicker, measuring up to 12 inches thick.

For grappling arts such as wrestling or Jiu Jitsu, choose from our mats which offer no-burn surfaces to help avoid friction-induced burns on your skin. These mats are popular in professional BJJ gyms, as well as in amateur grappling tournament circuit rings.

For aerobic studios, our interlocking foam tiles which are density optimized are excellent choices. These tiles feature surface textures designed to stand up to punishing aerobic training. Foam aerobic flooring reduces body fatigue, allowing for longer and harder workouts so you can get more out of each aerobic session.

For use with gym equipment, choose some of our super high density EVA foam mats. Most foam flooring isn't ideal for installation under heavy exercise equipment, but this high density foam is designed for just that purpose. These tiles are a popular home gym flooring solution, and are also used as portable horse stall or horse trailer flooring.

For yoga studios, you'll find a wide selection of foam floor tiles that help to relieve pressure on joints. These mats challenge balance and provide anti-fatigue benefits, making for an enjoyable and safe yoga session.

For cheerleading facilities, foam mats designed for the sport provide impact absorption and rebound. These mats are an excellent way to improve the safety of your facility while simultaneously improving the performance of the cheerleaders. Cheerleading foam mats often feature a carpet or vinyl surface for maximized traction and safety.

For gymnastics facilities, you'll have a wide variety of foam flooring to choose from. Foam floor mats are designed specifically for each gymnastics activity, from tumbling, stretching and skill training, to landings. We're proud to offer a large variety of rollout mats, folding mats, octagon, and wedge shaped mats to completely outfit your gymnastics facility. Our lower density and thicker foam mats are popular for high impact landing practices.

There are also plenty of options for personal exercise areas. With simple, interlocking edges, our tiles make for an easy-to-install, do-it-yourself (DIY) project. Most of our interlocking foam mats come with border strips attached which make it convenient to use any tile as a border, corner or center tile. These border strips allow for a clean, finished island installation, or consider a wall-to-wall installation for more coverage. These conveniently-sized mats are easy to ship and/or carry, or to pack up and re-transport.

We also offer simple, lightweight roll-out personal exercise mats that are easy to store in tight spaces, so even if you don't have room for a permanent home workout space, you can quickly convert any space into a temporary home gym.

If you're looking to cover a larger area, such as in a commercial gym, you'll find that many gym mats feature connector strips so you can combine multiple mats. Folding mats have hook and loop connector strips built into them so you can quickly and efficiently expand your workout area.

Carpet topped rollout mats have hook-and-loop connector tape that can be easy rolled out over the seams for a tight fit. Vinyl-topped rollout mats can also be taped together using vinyl tape. Some of our other large foam mats feature a no-skid bottom to prevent mats from shifting and separating.

Convenient, forgiving and easily expandable, it's no wonder that foam flooring is such a popular option for gyms and workout areas.

- Some foam offers fall height ratings for increased safety and injury prevention

A forgiving surface that is an economical and practical way to soften hard floors, foam floor tiles are popular additions to kids' play rooms. Super easy to install and available in a wide range of color possibilities, foam floor tiles are an enticing and easy way to create a safe playroom.

It's a fact of life that kids are going to run, play, and jump. They'll tumble and fall, especially when they're younger and still learning to walk. Kids also wrestle and roughhouse. Investing in a foam floor for a play space can provide kids with a safer area to play, helping to protect them against serious injuries. And in case drink or food spills happen, foam floor tiles are easy to clean.

But foam floor tiles offer additional benefits for kids' play spaces, too. Foam serves as a great way to help buffer noise, acting as a sound dampener and helping to protect adjoining rooms from some of the noise. Foam floor tiles can also offer insulation against the cold, so they can make a basement playroom warmer and more comfortable.

Additionally, it's easy to install foam floor tiles. You can mix and match colors and design floor patterns with these versatile tiles, and can re-position the tiles as you go, or when you're ready for a change. Simply line up the edges and push down on the seams to lock the tiles together.

Foam Flooring for Basements

Benefits of Foam for Basements
- Insulation properties of foam keep your floor warm, stopping cold concrete from penetrating up
- Non-absorbent foam will not be damaged by moisture
- Tiles can be pulled up and dried out in the event of a leak

Foam flooring can turn hard and cold basement concrete into a warm and comfortable space, giving new life and purpose to your basement. It's an economical and easy way to add versatility to your basement.

Foam flooring is removable so you can pull it out of the way if you're doing an activity that might damage the foam floor. If your basement has moisture problems, you can simply pull up the foam tiles to allow your subfloor to dry out. Foam will not absorb the moisture or be damaged by it, allowing you to floor your basement without having to worry about moisture damaging the floor.

If you will be placing furniture over the foam floor, we recommend using plastic coasters under the legs of heavy couches and chairs to prevent indentations in the foam. Generally, foam indentations will heal themselves in the same amount of time that they take to form. In cases where heavy objects are left on foam flooring for extended periods of time, indentations may become permanent.

Foam Floor Tiles for Horse Trailers and Stalls

Benefits of Foam for Horse Trailers and Stalls
- High density foam can handle the weight of horses while remaining lightweight and easily portable
- Excellent cushion maximizes your horse's comfort and health
- Solid surface makes for easy stall cleaning when you're away from home

Horse trailers and stalls need a strong, resilient flooring that can handle heavy weight. Greatmats offers super high density portable horse stall mats that are fully capable of handling the weight of large animals such as horses, but which are much more easily portable than rubber stall mats.

Most stall mats are made of rubber and are heavy and dense. They're difficult to move from one stall to another, and are also difficult to pull up if you need to clean or dry the subflooring. Interlocking foam mats are portable, making them an ideal solution for horse shows, clinics, trail rides, and any other time when you need to take your horse on the road.

These interlocking foam mats can be installed in a trailer. When you reach your destination, just pull the mats out of the trailer and install them in your horse's stall. When you're ready to head home, reverse the process. You won't have to worry about hauling around big heavy mats, and can offer your horse a forgiving surface to stand and sleep on even when you're away from home.

- Vinyl wrapped or vinyl-bonded foam tiles also hold up very well to footwear. Some of these feature a smooth surface and others, a tatami surface for extra grip. The vinyl tatami-textured surface, however, will not prevent skin burns.
- Pebble top textures are intended to create a non-slip surface on super high-density foam tiles.
- Felt grip tops are designed to provide the proper amount of traction and comfort for dog paws.
- Some tiles and roll out mats feature carpeted tops as well. On rollout mats, carpeted tops offer extra rebound.
- Some foam anti-fatigue mats are even available with diamond surface finishes.

The Foam Floor Mats 5/8 Premium tiles are offered in a wide selection of 15 vibrant colors. We also have interlocking foam floor mats in several different wood grain and cork patterns. Many of our interlocking athletic and martial arts tiles are also reversible, with different colors on each side.

Size and Thickness

Foam is available in a large variety of sizes and thicknesses to fit your individual needs. We carry interlocking foam tiles that range in thickness from 3/8 inch to 1-5/8 inches.

The most common foam tile sizes are 2x2 feet and 1x1 meter. Generally, our larger interlocking foam mats are designed for larger commercial installations and professional studios while our smaller 2x2 foot flooring tiles are designed to accommodate residential applications.

Mats at the 2x2 foot size can ship via ground service to your door via UPS or FedEx. 1x1 meter tiles will always ship on a pallet via freight delivery service.

Roll-out foam flooring for faster installation over large areas or for portable workout spaces. This foam flooring can be as small as a 5x10 foot roll and as large as 6 feet wide with custom lengths. A 42-foot length is common for many commercial cheer mats.

Hardness and Density

When choosing the right product for your project, you'll want to pay special attention to the foam's hardness and density.

The 'hardness' of foam is measured in a degree of Shore C. This specifies how hard or soft the foam feels to the touch. We test the hardness of foam with a hardness durometer measurement tool. Our standard 2x2 feet by 5/8 inch tiles have a hardness measurement of 30 to 35 Shore C. Our hardest tiles feature a hardness of 60 to 65 degrees Shore C. Many of our softer foam floor mats, including our line of home martial and professional arts puzzle mats, have undergone egg drop tests - some with from falls of up to 68 feet for impact absorption and the eggs did not break - in fact, they bounced.

'Density' is different than hardness. Density is a measurement of material mass and is a relationship of cubic meters or cubic feet in comparison to weight. For example: 130kg/m3 means 130 kilograms per cubic meter. Density specifies the amount of material to air ratio within a particular floor tile, while hardness is how hard the flooring will feel. The relationship between ''hardness'' and ''density'' is important because this can relate to the quality of the foam flooring.

Thermal Insulation
Foam will act as insulation like carpeting on top of concrete or wood. This is a great benefit when covering a cold basement floor, as the foam will feel as warm as the room temperature. For floors with in-floor heat, the tiles will not inhibit the heat from migrating up into the room. The R-value of foam is minimal and can be used on top of concrete with in floor heating.

Foam Tile Pricing
The size, versatility, and construction materials all contribute to the pricing for foam flooring. The lowest priced foam flooring options are thinner than the higher priced options, and you'll likely have fewer choices regarding their installation methods and potential uses.

For under $1 per square foot you can find 5/8-inch thick foam rolls without a finished surface or single-sided, 1/2-inch-thick puzzle mats with limited color options and generally no larger than 2x2 foot tiles.

If you move up the cost spectrum just a bit, you'll start to see reversible, wood-grain patterned and numerous color-option interlocking foam floor tiles enter the picture. You also start to get extra thickness for increased cushion and additional surface textures. For less than $2 per square foot you can find puzzle mats up to 1 inch thick and tiles with tatami, leather, pebble, felt or smooth surface textures. You also start to find other hardness options and tiles up to 1x1 meter in size.

For less than $3 per square foot, your thickness options go up to 1 5/8 inch and mat size possibilities increase exponentially with the addition of roll-out carpet tile mats. You also start to get the option of have carpet topped foam floor tiles.

By the $4 per square foot mark, vinyl topped roll out mats begin to enter the picture. And as you approach $5 per square foot you begin to enter the realm of folding mats and heavy duty 1x2 meter vinyl wrapped foam floor tiles. By the time you reach $6 per square foot, the foam flooring starts to include padded athletic vinyl rolls for athletic courts.

Beyond that, foam flooring enters the realm of outdoor pool decking, crash pads, stage mats and personal exercise mats.

Floor Planner

As you plan out your project, don't forget to utilize the Greatmats Online Pro Floor Planner. This planner can help you determine just how many tiles you need to fit your room dimensions, minimizing wasted material and saving you money.

It's easy and fast to install interlocking foam mats. Simply lay out the tiles and snap them together. In a wall-to-wall installation, you can easily cut the foam floor tiles to fit using a sharp utility knife. You may wish to lay a board below the foam when cutting in order to not damage the floor below. If the tiles start to fray when cutting, then it's time to change your blade.
