For customers who have concerns about wearing out natural grass through repeated workouts and practice time on the field, installing artificial sports turf from Greatmats is the perfect alternative.

For example, when working out for soccer, players may repeatedly run across the same space on the field when practicing shooting or goalkeeping. This can lead to premature wear of natural grass. Faux sports turf is made to survive this rough treatment and continue to look great.

Size and Shape Options

We at Greatmats carry various models of sports turf that will work for either indoor or outdoor installation. As a result, customers can find products in a variety of sizes, making it easier to quickly cover the desired space.

For an outdoor installation, huge rolls of synthetic turf will work well. We have many rolls available in widths of 12, 15, and 20 feet (although 15 feet is the most common width). Customers can then order a custom-cut length.

We also have indoor turf available in a rolled format, creating the coverage space desired in a huge athletic complex.

For those who only need to cover a small space, customers can select small mats of turf in sizes like 6x6 feet, 6x12 feet, 2x2 feet, or 6x35 feet. A baseball or softball association may use a small mat of sports turf for hitting practice on the field, protecting the natural grass underneath.

Material Options

These rolls of sports turf typically make use of polyethylene plastic material in the top layer. The manufacturer molds this plastic into a format that resembles blades of grass, hoping to create the most realistic resemblance to natural grass.

Customers can select rolls or mats that have varying pile heights in the faux blades. For those who want to create a putting green in a recreational setting at home or on a commercial golf course, a short pile height is important.

Athletes should be able to wear the same shoes on this material that they would use on natural grass.

Some models of sports turf will include a padding layer on the underside of the turf. A little bit of padding can help to protect the knee, ankle, and hip joints of the athletes using the turf versus working out on turf laid over concrete. Padding typically will measure about 5 mm in thickness (or about 1/5 inch).

Pattern and Texture Options

Our rolls of faux grass are typically available in a green color, as the majority of customers are looking to mimic the look of actual grass. We even offer multiple shades of green in these rolls, helping our customers achieve the perfect look for the space.

For those situations where customers prefer something other than green-colored turf, we have more than a dozen other color choices. These options include:
  • Black
  • Blue
  • Brown
  • Clay
  • Maroon
  • Navy blue
  • Orange
  • Purple
  • Red
  • Silver or gray
  • Tan
  • White
  • Yellow

For an outdoor installation, be certain to choose a roll of turf that has UV protection built into it to resist fading from the sun over time.

Common Use Options

This turf is ideal for creating athletic fields or workout spaces outdoors or indoors. The faux grass will not wear away like natural grass might from athletes using cleats.

For a golf or tennis practice area, select a small mat or a roll of turf with a low pile height to ensure a true ball roll and bounce.

For baseball or softball fielding practice, a medium pile height is a good choice, as it will simulate what players will see on the field.

Soccer and football practice areas will want a taller pile height in the artificial blades of grass, mimicking what that type of field delivers. Those performing sled work or participating in general workouts will also prefer a taller pile height for the best traction.

Installation Options

To install a roll of turf outdoors, the installer will need to bury treated wood around the perimeter of the layout. This will serve as an anchor for attaching the edges of the turf tightly to the ground.

Before installing the roll outdoors, the installer will need to create a compacted surface over which to place the roll. This could be dirt, sand, asphalt, or crushed gravel.

Indoors, installers may choose to glue the turf to the subfloor for a permanent layout. Some people choose to use vinyl tape to secure the roll to the subfloor, allowing them to remove the roll later.

Cleaning and Maintenance Requirements

Avoid allowing people to use sunflower seeds, peanut shells, or gum with this turf, as such items will make the cleanup process far more difficult.

To remove dry debris from the turf indoors or outdoors, make use of a vacuum cleaner or a leaf blower. For a short pile height, a broom will work as well.

For more thorough cleaning, use a garden hose and a spray nozzle to rinse the blades of faux turf outdoors. If the indoor installation has a floor drain, you can rinse the rolls indoors as well.
