Most Frequently Asked Questions About Foam Flooring
Why is my foam tile flooring bubbling up and how do I fix it?
High heat or humidity is the most common cause behind foam flooring bubbling up or expanding. To prevent this issue, be sure to leave room around the perimeter of the flooring when you install it. Leaving space between the flooring and the wall allows for expansion without the floor bubbling up.
How do I fix a foam mat with a hole?
In most cases foam mats are not repairable, and the mat will need to be replaced. This is particularly true when you are working with EVA and PE foam floors. If you're working with foam tiles, you may be able to flip a reversible tile over to use the other side.
How much is a foam floor?
The precise cost of a foam floor depends on the style, type of foam, and size of the floor. Greatmats offers foam flooring ranging from 99 cents per square foot up to more than $32 per square foot, so you'll certainly be able to find options within your budget.
How big are square foam mats?
Square foam mats are typically either 2x2 feet or 1x1 meters in size.
Why People Prefer Foam Flooring
Thanks to its convenience, durability, and affordability, foam flooring is a popular option for kids' play rooms, basements, cheerleading practice areas, and more.
Foam is a highly convenient option. Because foam is so lightweight, you can easily transport and install it. Foam floor tiles are conveniently sized, so a single person can complete the installation.
But foam offers other benefits, too - it's an excellent thermal and sound insulator, and it helps to absorb shock. These characteristics make foam a great flooring option for combat sports and cheerleading, but it also contributes to a safer, more enjoyable environment when used in a kids' play room. In most cases foam can be installed without the use of adhesives, so it's an excellent - and simple - DIY project.
Foam flooring may be lightweight, but it's also highly durable. All of Greatmats' foam floor tiles are made of waterproof and closed cell foams for excellent durability. Some foam mats feature polyurethane foam cores, and are wrapped with durable vinyl exteriors. This design makes the mats easy to clean and disinfect.
Because our foam floor tiles are waterproof, spills are no big deal and are easily cleaned. If you're using foam in a kids' area, easy cleanup is a huge advantage.
Additionally, we offer foam flooring mats with a cross-linked polyethylene foam base. Available with either vinyl or carpet surfaces, these mats are highly durable.
No matter what your budget, you're sure to be able to find a foam product that works for you, since foam is highly affordable. We have foam products available for under $1 per foot, so it's suitable for even lower budget projects. Whether you're looking for an affordable flooring option for a large application, or need something convenient for use in a small room in your home, we have a variety of foam products that are sure to fit the bill, affordably.
With over 80 foam products to choose from, Greatmats offers options suitable for home, commercial, and athletic use. Choose from a wide variety of puzzle mats and tiles, glue-down or peel-and-stick foam tiles, roll-out foam mats, folding gym mats, and foam underlayment rolls.
Let's take a look at some of our most popular products.
Athletic Foam Floor Tiles
Benefits of Foam for Athletic Flooring
- Excellent shock and impact absorption
- Durable enough to withstand rigorous use
- High density options can withstand the weight of workout equipment
- Easy installation, and portable options are available
Foam floor tiles are often utilized in home and commercial athletic training facilities. They're favored for the cushion and impact absorption properties which are essential in athletic environments. Foam floor tiles are ideal for home gyms, martial arts flooring, aerobic studios, boxing gym floors, and more.
For striking arts, such as Karate, Taekwondo, or boxing, a blend of stability and shock absorption are essential. Foam floor tiles offer stability to help keep athletes balanced, while also providing adequate cushion and shock absorption for landings. Our tiles are available in a variety of surfaces that control how much slippage an athlete will experience. Some are designed for use with bare feet, while others are strong enough to withstand the wear and tear of shoes and boots. Foam tiles intended for use with the striking arts are usually 7/8 to 1 inch thick.
For throwing arts, such as judo, increased shock absorption is a must. Our thicker foam mats and tiles, starting at 1-1/4 inch thick, can absorb impact but also provide critical fall height protection for improved safety. You'll find foam puzzle mats in thicknesses up to 1-5/8 inch, while vinyl or denim covered foam mats can be much thicker, measuring up to 12 inches thick.
We also offer mats with no-burn surfaces suitable for use with grappling arts such as wrestling or Jiu Jitsu. These mats help to avoid friction-induced burns on skin and are popular in professional BJJ gyms, as well as in amateur grappling tournament circuit rings.
Interlocking foam tiles are an excellent choice for aerobic studios. These density optimized tiles feature textures which are designed to withstand the punishing, repetitive nature of aerobics training. Foam flooring helps to reduce body fatigue, so you can comfortably work out longer and harder. This means you get more out of each aerobic session, all thanks to your flooring selection.
Heavy gym equipment can result in indentations and damage in typical foam flooring, so if you need something strong enough to pair with gym equipment, consider our super high density EVA foam mats. This high-density foam is designed specifically to be able to withstand higher weights without incurring damage. These tiles are a popular solution for home gym floors, but are also strong enough to be used as portable horse stall and horse trailer flooring.
Softer, more forgiving foam floor tiles help to relieve pressure on joints and are an excellent choice for yoga studios. These mats both challenge balance while providing anti-fatigue benefits, making for an enjoyable and safe yoga session.
Cheerleading facilities need superior impact absorption and rebound, which specially designed foam mats can provide. Cheerleading foam mats help to improve the safety of any facility. Available with carpet or vinyl surfaces, these mats maximize traction, helping to maximize safety while also improving the performance of cheerleaders.
Greatmats stocks a variety of foam flooring suitable for use in gymnastics facilities. Foam floor mats provide excellent shock absorption and cushion, and are designed for use with activities including tumbling, stretching, skill training, and landings. At Greatmats, you can choose from a large variety of rollout mats, folding mats, octagon mats, and wedge shaped mats; we have everything you need to completely outfit your gymnastics facility.
If you're looking to outfit a workout space in the comfort of your own home, we offer many practical options. Foam tiles are easy to install, and make a great DIY project. Most of our interlocking foam mats include border strips to create a finished-edge island installation. For more coverage, a wall-to-wall installation is also easy to create. Since the mats are conveniently sized, you can easily pack them up and transport them if the need ever arises.
In addition to the interlocking foam mats, you'll want to consider our lightweight roll-out personal exercise mats. These mats can be stored in small spaces, then rolled out and placed on top of any existing flooring to make for a more comfortable workout space. Even if you don't have a dedicated home gym, you can use these roll-out mats to temporarily convert any area into your gym.
For larger commercial gyms, folding gym mats offer additional cushion and protection but with the advantage of being temporary. Many of these mats feature connector strips, so you can combine them into long lanes or larger surface areas, depending on your needs. Once you're done, you can separate the mats and fold them up for easy storage.
Additionally, our carpet topped rollout mats also have hook-and-loop connector tape; they can be easily connected and feature a tight fit that will not move during a workout or practice. Our vinyl-topped rollout mats can be taped together using vinyl tape to create one solid surface. Designed with safety and convenience in mind, some of our other large foam mats have a non-skid bottom to prevent them from shifting or separating.
Foam flooring offers the excellent cushion, convenience, and versatility that is preferred in any gym or workout area.
Kids' Foam Floor Tiles
Benefits of Foam For Kids' Areas
- Soft and forgiving, foam can transform hard surfaces into kid-friendly areas
- Some foam products offer fall height ratings for increased safety and injury prevention
- Easy cleanup, so spills are no big deal
- Noise buffering and sound dampening properties make for a more enjoyable environment for everyone
When falls and roughhousing are common in kids' play rooms, a soft and forgiving flooring is essential. Foam tiles are a great way to soften hard floors to create a safe playroom. Additionally, foam is economical and easy to clean. Available in a wide range of color possibilities, foam tiles are a favored flooring for kids' play rooms.
Kids run, play, roughhouse, and jump. They'll tumble and fall, especially when they're younger and are still developing their coordination. The best way to keep kids safe during play is to provide them with a safe, forgiving floor surface that can help minimize the effects of falls, helping to protect them against serious injuries. And since food and drink spills are bound to happen, foam floor tiles are easy to clean.
Foam floor tiles offer additional benefits that are important in kids' play rooms. Because foam helps to buffer noise, it can help to minimize the sound volume in your home when your kids are playing. Foam also offers excellent insulation against the cold, so foam tiles can make a basement warmer and more comfortable.
If you're looking for a playroom flooring that's easy to install, there's no beating foam floor tiles. Since the tiles are available in a wide array of vivid colors, you can mix and match colors to create fun floor patterns. Since no adhesive is required, you can change the design as you go, or simply pull up the floor and create a new design when you tire of the old one. Just line up the tile edges and push down on the seams to fit the tiles together.
Our Premium 5/8-inch Foam Floor Mat is our most popular foam floor tile for kids' rooms. Available in 15 brilliant colors, this tile is sure to add style and vibrancy to any room. These tiles are so easy to clean, and they're affordable, making them a favorite among parents. If spills occur, just sweep and then use a damp mop as needed. The tiles are waterproof and stain resistant, so they'll continue to look great. Both lead and latex free, these foam floor tiles create the safe environment that you want for your child.

Foam Flooring for Basements
Benefits of Foam for Basements
- Insulation properties of foam keep your floor warm, stopping cold concrete from penetrating up into the flooring
- Non-absorbent foam will not be damaged by moisture
- Tiles can be pulled up and dried out in the event of a leak
Foam flooring is an affordable and easy way to convert a hard, cold basement floor into a warm, welcoming, and comfortable space. The new floor can increase the versatility of your basement at an affordable price point, helping you to make the most out of your home by creating a family room, den, or other livable basement space.
One major advantage of foam flooring in basements is that the flooring is removable. If your basement has moisture problems, you can pull up the foam tiles so that the subfloor can dry. Foam won't absorb moisture or be damaged by it, so you can confidently floor your basement without worrying about potential moisture damage. Plus, if you're doing an activity that might damage the floor, it's easy to pull up the floor and temporarily move it.
Because foam can be indented by heavy weights, we recommend using plastic coasters under the legs of heavy couches and chairs. Generally, foam indentations will heal themselves in the same amount of time that they take to form. If heavy objects are left on foam flooring for extended periods of time, the indentations may become permanent.
Foam Floor Tiles for Horse Trailers and Stalls
Benefits of Foam for Horse Trailers and Stalls
- High density foam can handle the weight of horses while remaining lightweight and easily portable
- Excellent cushion maximizes your horse's comfort and health
- Solid surface makes for easy stall cleaning when you're away from home
- Lightweight design means you can move these mats without assistance, ideal for anyone who travels alone
When it comes to flooring for horse trailers and stalls, you need a strong, resilient flooring that can handle heavy weight. Our high density portable horse stall mats are fully capable of handling the significant weight of animals such as horses, but they're lighter weight and more easily portable than rubber stall mats.
Most stall mats are made of heavy, dense rubber, which is highly durable and is ideal for permanent stalls in your barn. However, the mats are difficult to move from stall to stall, and they're also a challenge to pull up if you need to clean the subfloor. Because interlocking foam mats are designed with portability in mind, they're an ideal solution for horse shows, clinics, and trail rides.
Install these interlocking foam mats in your trailer, then pull them out when you reach your destination. Place the mats into your horse's stall, and you'll have instant stall flooring. Just reverse the process when you're ready to head home. You won't have to worry about finding someone to help you haul around heavy mats, and can offer your horse a forgiving surface to help keep him comfortable while you're away from home.
Foam Pool Decking Tiles
Benefits of Foam for Pool Decking
- Excellent traction and slip resistance creates a safe surface
- Forgiving surface offers limited fall protection, essential for a high-risk area
- Suitable for both indoor and outdoor installations
High end foam pool decking tiles offer excellent cushion and comfort, creating a safe, protective surface around pools and hot tubs. Whereas slips and falls are a common risk in wet areas, these foam tiles offer excellent traction and slip resistance. They also offer limited fall protection, making them an ideal solution for high-risk areas where slips and falls so often occur.
Foam pool decking tiles can be used both indoors and out. Peel-and-stick installation methods make indoor installations fast and easy, while outdoor tiles do require adhesive for installation. Consider foam decking tiles for hotel and school pool areas, as well as for municipal pools and waterparks.

Each surface type provides different advantages:
- Thatch textured tiles are most resistant to footwear.
- Non-burn tatami textured tiles are won't burn bare skin.
- Leather textured tiles are meant for use under bare feet.
- Vinyl wrapped or vinyl-bonded foam tiles hold up very well to footwear. Some of these feature a smooth surface, while others have a tatami surface to provide extra traction. It's important to note that the vinyl tatami-textured surface will not prevent skin burns, unlike the non-burn tatami tiles.
- Pebble top textures create a non-slip surface on super high-density foam tiles.
- Felt grip tops are designed to provide the proper amount of traction and comfort for dog paws.
- Some tiles and roll out mats feature carpeted tops as well. On rollout mats, carpeted tops offer extra rebound.
- Some foam anti-fatigue mats are available with diamond surface finishes.
No matter what type of finish you're looking for, there's certainly a tile to suit your needs.
Foam Tile Colors
We are proud to stock interlocking foam mats available in a whole rainbow of colors. From brilliant colors to muted tones to wood grain designer patterns that complement any decor, you will not find a shortage of options here.
The Foam Floor Mats 5/8 Premium tiles are available in a wide selection of 15 vibrant colors. We also have interlocking foam floor mats that are available in several different wood grain and cork patterns. Many of our interlocking athletic and martial arts tiles are also reversible, with different colors on each side, so you can create fun patterns if you wish.
Size and Thickness
Your specific project will determine the ideal size and thickness of your foam tiles, so that's why we carry interlocking foam tiles that range in thickness from 3/8 inch to 1-5/8 inches.
Our most common foam tile sizes are 2x2 feet and 1x1 meter. The larger interlocking foam mats are usually designed for larger commercial installations and professional studios, since they can cover significant areas while minimizing seams. Our smaller 2x2 foot flooring tiles are designed to accommodate residential applications, since they are more convenient to transport and can be easily fit into smaller spaces.
Our 2x2 foot sized mats can ship via ground service to your door via UPS or FedEx for convenience. Our 1x1 meter tiles will always ship on a pallet via freight delivery service.
Roll-out foam flooring is an excellent option which allows for faster installation in larger areas. We offer roll-out flooring as small as a 5x10 foot roll, all the way up to 6 feet wide with custom lengths.
Hardness and Density
You'll want to pay special attention to the foam's hardness and density when choosing a product that's right for your project.
The 'hardness' of foam is measured in a degree of Shore C. Shore C refers to how hard or soft the foam feels to the touch. The hardness is tested with a hardness durometer measurement tool. Our standard 2x2 feet by 5/8 inch tiles have a hardness measurement of 30 to 35 Shore C. Our hardest tiles feature a hardness of 60 to 65 degrees Shore C. Many of our softer foam floor mats, including our line of home martial and professional arts puzzle mats, have undergone egg drop tests. Some of these eggs survived falls of up to 68 feet onto the mats. The eggs did not break - in fact, they bounced.
'Density' is different than hardness. Density is a measurement of material mass and is a relationship of cubic meters or cubic feet in comparison to weight. For example: 130kg/m3 means 130 kilograms per cubic meter. Density specifies the amount of material to air ratio within a particular floor tile, while hardness is how hard the flooring will feel. The relationship between ''hardness'' and ''density'' is important because this can relate to the quality of the foam flooring.
Many homeowners prefer foam flooring because it acts as insulation on top of concrete or wood. This is a great benefit when you're covering a concrete basement floor, since the foam will feel as warm as the room temperature.
If you're working with a floor with in-floor heat, you can still use foam flooring. The tiles will not inhibit the heat from traveling up into the room. Foam's R-value is minimal, and foam can be used on top of concrete with in-floor heating.
Foam Tile Pricing
The pricing of foam flooring is affected by its size, versatility, and construction materials. The lowest priced foam options are thinner than the higher priced products, and you'll likely have fewer choices when it comes to their installation methods and uses.
Our 5/8-inch thick foam rolls without a finished surface are available for under $1 per square foot. Our 1/2-inch-thick puzzle mats with limited color options also fall into this price range.
If you move up the cost spectrum just a bit, our reversible, wood-grain patterned and numerous color-option interlocking foam floor tiles enter the picture. You'll also be able to choose extra thickness for increased cushion and additional surface textures. For less than $2 per square foot you can find puzzle mats up to 1 inch thick and tiles with tatami, leather, pebble, felt or smooth surface textures. You'll see other options in terms of hardness, as well as tiles measuring up to 1x1 meter in size.
Moving up again to less than $3 per square foot means your thickness options will increase to 1 5/8 inch. Additionally, the mat size possibilities increase exponentially with the addition of roll-out carpet tile mats. You will also start to have carpet topped foam floor tiles as an option.
At the $4 per square foot mark, vinyl topped roll out mats begin to enter the picture. And as you approach $5 per square foot you enter the realm of folding mats and heavy duty 1x2 meter vinyl wrapped foam floor tiles. At $6 per square foot, the options include padded athletic vinyl rolls for athletic courts.
Past the $6 per square foot mark you will see outdoor pool decking, crash pads, stage mats and personal exercise mats.
As you plan out your project, don't forget to utilize the Greatmats Online Pro Floor Planner. This planner can help you determine just how many tiles you need to fit your room dimensions, and you can even lay out your room to see how it will look. This useful tool helps to minimize wasted material while saving you money.
Foam Flooring Installation
Foam mats are fast and easy to install. Lay out the tiles and fit them together - and you're done. For a wall-to-wall installation, you can easily cut the foam floor tiles to fit using a sharp utility knife. You may wish to lay a board below the foam when cutting in order to not damage the floor below. If the tiles start to fray when cutting, then it's time to change your blade.
