Choosing Your Tiles

As you choose the tile products that are right for your project, keep the following factors in mind.

  1. Intended tile use: What do you plan to use the tiles for? Your intended use for the tiles will determine which characteristics are most important to you, such as comfort, traction, shock absorption, durability, ease of maintenance, and more.
  2. Environmental factors: Will your tiles be exposed to moisture? UV rays? Fluctuating temperatures? Some tiles are built specifically to withstand the challenges of outdoor use.
  3. Installation method: Will you be installing the tiles yourself? Many of our tiles install in just seconds, but some require more involved adhesive installations. You should also consider whether you need a temporary or permanent installation.

Tile Installation Methods

As you explore the floor tiles offered here, you'll find that the tiles are available with a variety of installation methods. Here's what you need to know about each.

  1. Puzzle Style Tiles: These tiles are the easiest tiles to install. Simply align the tiles together and press down on the seams; the tiles fit together like puzzle pieces. They will stay together until you intentionally separate them. There's no adhesive required, and you can remove the tiles in the future if you need. Additionally, you can expand your floor by adding tiles in the future. If a tile becomes worn, you can replace just that one tile, rather than replacing the entire floor.
  2. Straight Edge Tiles: Your traditional tile design, straight edge tiles have finished edges that make for a clean installation. Most straight edge tiles are installed with an adhesive to hold them in place.
  3. Interlocking Tiles: In addition to puzzle style tiles, you'll find that some tiles feature different connecting systems. Pin and lock systems and snap together systems are common, and allow you to install the tiles yourself without adhesive. These tiles can be disconnected again in the future if necessary.

Give some thought to which installation method is best for you, and for the environment where you're installing the tiles. With many DIY installation methods, our tiles can save you on professional installation costs.

Below are some of our most popular types of tiles.

Rubber Tiles

Rubber floor tiles are preferred for their extreme durability. Many rubber tiles feature warranties that can exceed 15 years. One of the heaviest flooring tile materials, rubber flooring offers shock absorption and a comfortable surface to stand on.

Additionally, rubber tiles are an eco-friendly option. Most of our rubber flooring tiles are made in the USA from recycled tires, meaning fewer tires end up in the landfill each year.

Rubber tiles range in cost per square foot depending on their color, thickness, design, and intended use.

Rubber tiles are popular for:

  1. Playground flooring
  2. Weight room flooring
  3. Gym flooring
  4. Athletic flooring
  5. Horse stalls
  6. Equestrian facilities
  7. Garages
  8. And more

Foam Tiles

One of the major benefits of foam floor tiles is their excellent shock absorption and the comfortable surface that they create. Foam tiles are available in a number of different densities, with some of them much softer than other, more durable foams.

Foam tiles are lightweight and easy to install; all of our foam tiles have puzzle style interlocking edges for an installation that takes just seconds. Some of our foam tiles also feature ASTM fall height ratings for increased safety, making them a great choice for use in kids' play areas.

While foam tiles are some of the least expensive and most versatile flooring tile options, they do have their limitations. Foam can be easily punctured by sharp objects and is not intended for outdoor use.

Foam tiles are popular for:

  1. Kids' playrooms
  2. Kids' bedrooms
  3. Athletic flooring
  4. Trade show flooring
  5. MMA spaces
  6. Basements
  7. And more

Plastic Tiles

Plastic floor tiles are another lightweight flooring option. Most of our plastic tiles are either made of PVC or Polypropylene. Plastic floor squares can create a comfortable, durable surface which is a bit stronger than foam tiles. Many of these tiles are also raised floors, which allows air to flow beneath the tile and prevent moisture from becoming trapped in areas like moist basements or garages.

Some are intended for areas where heavy machinery may need to drive or park on them and are rated to support rolling loads of more than 50,000 pounds or static loads of 20,000 pounds. Warranties usually range from 1-10 years. Plastic tiles start at just over $2 per square foot and generally stay under $9 per square foot.

Plastic floor tiles are popular for:

  1. Decks
  2. Patios
  3. Pool surrounds
  4. Basements
  5. Exercise rooms
  6. Home gyms
  7. Playrooms
  8. And more

Vinyl Tiles

Vinyl floor tiles are a popular choice for athletic facilities, aerobic studios, and more. These tiles are highly durable and typically clip or snap together. Most of our vinyl tiles have a plastic base with a vinyl top, and come with warranties lasting between 5 and 10 years. Some tiles, such as LVT tiles, require glue down installation, yet they offer an eye-catching, luxurious finish.

With a variety of flooring squares for sale, our vinyl tiles range from less than $2 per square foot to just approximately $14 per square foot.

Vinyl floor tiles are popular for:

  1. Athletic facilities
  2. Aerobic studios
  3. Dance floors
  4. Trade shows
  5. Commercial flooring
  6. Office flooring
  7. Home floors

Carpet Tiles

Carpet tiles are an innovative way to get the look and feel of carpet, but with temporary installation options. We offer a wide selection of floor tiles that are carpet topped, some of which clip or snap together for a fast installation with no adhesive required. Many of our carpet tiles feature a raised base, so if moisture gets beneath the tile it can circulate and dry, rather than soaking the carpet and causing a mold problem.

We offer a wide selection of carpet tiles intended for commercial, high-traffic areas, as well as those that are perfect for home use. At Greatmats, you can be guaranteed a wide variety of quality carpet tiles for less than you would pay elsewhere.

Carpet tiles are popular for:

  1. Basements
  2. Gyms
  3. Play areas
  4. Commercial spaces
  5. Trade show booths
  6. And more
