Marley Floor Options for Dance

Selecting the right marley floor is vital for a dance studio, for practice at home, or for touring groups. Having a high-quality dance floor design gives dance students the safest possible conditions.

Whether you need a permanent installation, a portable installation, custom sizes, full rolls, or even a specific color, Greatmats has a marley floor product that can meet your needs. We are the largest dealer of DIY dance flooring in the Midwest. We stock key brands and styles like Rosco Adagio flooring.

Marley Floor for Professional Dance Studios

At a professional dance studio, customers often want a semi-permanent installation, especially in practice areas. There's no need to move the flooring roll around, so a semi-permanent installation makes sense.

Studio owners can do the installation themselves, making use of vinyl tape to secure the marley to the subfloor, eliminating any chance of having it slip around as students use it.

Marley Floor for Stage and Theater Performances

If you need a roll that you can carry to performances at other locations, we have lightweight marley rolls that are easier to carry to a stage or theater than thicker, heavier rolls.

If you will store the roll at the theater, you often may need to use the stage for different kinds of performances. Having a style of marley floor that's easy to roll up and move is vital. You can install it for performances that feature primarily dance and remove it for types of shows with equipment that could damage the marley.

Marley Floor Reversible Vinyl Options

In some cases, you may need a specific color of marley vinyl to match the mood of the performance. We deliver this option with reversible floors that may be gray or white on one side and black on the other side. Both sides have the same quality surface. Generlly, reversible floors are for soft shoes only.

Reversible designs also may lengthen the lifespan of the floor.

Marley Floor Custom Cut Lengths

Marley rolls come in various lengths, our most common full lengths are 101 ft. and 131.3 ft. for studios. If you don't need a full roll of marley for your studio or theater, we can ship a custom-cut length to you. If you need to be able to move the roll more easily, a custom-cut length will weigh less than a full roll.

Reach out to the Greatmats customer service team for information on custom-cut options.

Portable Marley Floor for Use at Home

We offer some marley flooring options that are cut to a smaller length, allowing you to use them at home for practice sessions outside of class time. These 6ft, 8ft and 10ft legths are lightweight, so you can move them easily on your own.

Consider adding a subflooring product from Greatmats to deliver cushioning and stability.

Marley Floor Q&A

What do you put under the marley floor?

When placing the vinyl over concrete, a variety of items will work, including sprung wood floor, high density foam tiles (for home use only), rubber rolls, or rubber under a plastic modular tile base. If going over carpet at home, as an alternative, consider using a polypropylene rigid plastic modular tile. Some of the specific options Greatmats offers include:
  • Sprung floor: It consists of closed-cell foam and medium-density fiberboard. These elements combine to create a great bounce while staying flexible to absorb a dancer's impact.
  • Pro Subfloor Studio Elite: This is a more economical choice that is accessible to smaller groups and productions. This isn't a sprung system, though it does include a cushioning rubber layer. The snap-together modular plastic tiles are safe and efficient.
  • Home Dance Subfloor: This is economical and also easily portable, so it's a favorite of tours. The materials create comfortable subfloors that can be easily disassembled and reassembled. It's suitable for light use.

Can you tap on marley floors?

Absolutely. And for tap dancing on a marley dance floor, a dark colored material will help disguise oxidation marks left behind by aluminum tap shoes. The black oxidation marks blend in fairly well with black marley versus a gray color. Make sure that the marley you are choosing is recommended for tap dance.

Why is marley the best flooring for a dance studio?

A marley floor dance studio installation needs to yield plenty of versatility for different styles of dancing. Slip-resistance may be important for some styles of dance, for example, while controlled slide is important for ballet. It also needs to have excellent durability, being able to stand up to constant practice. Finally, aesthetics are important to impress customers who are visiting your dance studio to sign up for classes.

How much does a marley floor cost?

Prices for a marley dance floor for sale start at less than $3 per square foot. This low-priced option is perfect for large rehearsal spaces or a dance studio of any size. Ordering large sizes keeps the price per square foot lower. A pre-cut, custom length marley floor mat for small areas may cost a little more per square foot. However, a customer doesn't have wasted material, which can make custom-cut marley flooring for sale a good value, too, for a small in-home practice areas, for a touring group, or for a studio setting.

How thick is marley flooring?

The thickness of marley dance floor rolls typically fits between 1.5 mm and 3 mm, or about 0.06 in. and 0.12 in. Because of its thin design, cutting marley flooring to fit is easy. When the typical underlayment is included, customers usually end up with a total thickness of 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch.
