You're sure to find a dance floor to fit your needs and even subfloor options for your dance floor to make your dancing surface perfect for any occasion while fitting within your budget.

With so many dance floor options, choosing the product that's right for you may be a little overwhelming. This checklist can help. Greatmats is proud to offer both professional and home dance floor solutions. We offer approximately 80 different options and accessories for dance styles including tap, jazz, ballet, modern and more.

How to Choose the Right Dance Flooring

  1. Pinpoint over what type of surface the dance floor will be installed.
  2. Establish whether the dance floor will be permanent or need to be portable.
  3. Be sure to keep in mind the style of dance it will be used for.
  4. Identify what type of footwear will be used on the dance floor.
  5. Consider whether the floor will need to support equipment, such as stages and props used in theatrical settings
  6. Determine whether you'll be installing the dance floor yourself or hiring a professional. If you opt to install the floor yourself, consider what type of installation method you're comfortable handling, such as tape-down or snap-together tiles.

Whether you're looking to outfit your home studio or need a professional-quality floor for a school, performance venue, or practice space, we're sure to have the right option for you.

Consider Greatmats dance flooring to:

  • Revitalize your dance studio and add professionalism to any space
  • Create the ideal competition, practice, or performance space for a studio, an event venue, and more
  • Outfit your basement or garage for a home practice space of your own
  • Outfit your basement or garage for a home practice space of your own, saving you on studio rentals and transportation time
  • Transport a dance floor with you for tours and competitions

Deciding Between Portable and Permanent Dance Floor Options

One of the major decisions you'll face is whether to purchase a permanent or temporary dance floor. Each option has its own benefits.

Permanently Installed Dance Floors:
- Are ideal for dance studios and performance spaces dedicated to dance
- Create a professional dance space to maximize dancer safety and performance
- Are highly durable and, with proper care, will look great for years to come

Temporary Dance Floors:
- Feature a simple installation so that the flooring can be installed, removed, and transported
- Are ideal for traveling dance troupes and events
- Make your space more versatile, since a single studio space can be used for multiple types of dance simply by changing out the floor

Ultimately, whether a temporary or permanent installation is right will depend on your dance space, the planned types of dance to be performed, and whether you may ever need to use that space for different dance types or purposes.

Let's take a look at some of the most popular types of dance floors to help you get started.

Tap and Hard Shoe Dance Floors

Suitable for:
- Tap
- Hard shoe dancing

We recommend our black marley floors for tap and other hard shoe dancing. Because tap shoes tend to scuff or leave marks dance floor surfaces, other dance floor types may quickly accumulate permanent black marks. Black marley dance flooring is guaranteed to help hide these marks. Additionally, this vinyl dance floor material is available in rolls and can be easily installed with a tape-down method.

If you're looking for a temporary or portable tap dance floor, we offer modular snap together tiles with a vinyl surface. The modular design of the floors means that you can easily change the size and shape of your dance floor without damaging the floor for future performances. The tiles snap together over any hard surface, and only pull apart when you want them to. Additionally, the modular design of the tile includes a raised plastic base which offers excellent sound enhancement that's ideal for tap dancing.

Soft Shoe Dance Floors

Suitable for:
- Soft shoe dancing

We offer a number of dance floors suitable for soft shoe dancing. One of the more versatile options that we have is a reversible marley vinyl material in black and white, or black and grey combinations. With these dance floor mats, you can choose the desired coloring for each performance. This reversible dance floor easily rolls up, making it a great choice if you're looking for a floor that is highly portable.

Many customers looking for a flooring suitable for ballet and modern dance opt for our grey marley dance floor. The soft and flexible feel of the floor is ideal for these soft shoe dance types.

Marley Dance Flooring

Suitable for:
- Hard shoe dancing
- Soft shoe dancing
- Popular for ballet, hip hop, ballroom, barefoot, tap, modern, Flamenco, Irish, jazz, lyrical, drill team

Looking for a floor that can accommodate both hard and soft shoe dance types? Then marley dance flooring may be the perfect choice. It is great for hard or soft shoes, offers excellent slip resistance, and is durable enough to last for years. This dance surface is popular for ballet, hip hop, ballroom and barefoot dancing along with tap modern, Flamenco, Irish, jazz, lyrical and drill team dance styles.

Marley flooring is frequently found in professional studios. This vinyl product is available in black, white and gray. Vinyl dance flooring can be purchased either in specifically sized pre-cut lengths or in full length rolls at a discounted price. Cut lengths are easier to install, compared to full size rolls, which can weigh more than 270 lbs.

Marley flooring is suitable for permanent installations, but it is also versatile and can be rolled up and transported. Most customers install marley dance floors in their studios simply using a tape down method of installation. Use Rosco single-sided vinyl tape on top of Rosco dance flooring to cover the seams. Next apply double-sided tape around the perimeter to adhere the vinyl to the sub-floor.

If you're looking to take your marley flooring on the road, then consider pairing it with one of our modular tile subfloor solutions. These products help to ease the impact and stresses on your body from dancing on hard surfaces, and are a must-have when you're going on the road and will be dancing on different surface types.

Marley flooring is durable, and with the right care, it will continue to look great for years. To keep the marley vinyl dance flooring clean, use Rosco brand floor cleaner, available in standard and heavy duty strength. To keep the flooring lasting long and in top condition, we recommend cleaning vinyl flooring at least twice a week.

Touring Dance Floors

Suitable for:
- All types of dance
- Theatrical installations

The Adagio Tour is specifically designed to keep up with the rigorous demands, in terms of both a dance floor's durability and portability, that a touring dance troupe needs. This roll out dance floor weighs only 1.6 pounds per foot, making it easy to transport and assemble, again and again. It's designed to lay flat quickly, and is strong enough to withstand all forms of dance. Thanks to its durability and portability, the Adagio Tour flooring is also great for temporary theatrical installations.

The Adagio Tour is equipped with a matte, non-reflective surface that will look great but which is flexible enough to withstand years of rolling and re-rolling. Please note, though, that this flooring is meant only for temporary usage, as the product lacks the thickness required for a tap floor that will see rigorous use.

Event Dance Floors

Suitable for:
- Any type of dance

If you need a great looking, easy to install dance floor for a special event, Greatmats recommends our snap together dance floor tiles. These tiles are portable and easy to assemble, and they have a great hardwood appearance for a beautiful finished floor. These snap together tiles can handle any type of dance, making them perfect for weddings, DJs, or other types of entertainment companies. Designed for easy installation and disassembly, snap together tiles can be used repeatedly for years.

These dance tiles are made of a commercial grade plastic with a vinyl top for excellent durability, and you can choose from several wood-grain looks or stone looks. The loop and tab locking system hooks the floor together tightly so you don't have to worry about the tiles pulling apart during a dance. When your event is over, the tiles easily disassemble. The loop and tab connection system lasts much longer than most portable dance floors currently on the market, ensuring you get the most use out of your investment.
