The playground flooring products that we offer are durable and long-lasting, and many of the playground mats and interlocking tiles are resistant to water, sun, and extreme temperature variations that they'll face during outdoor use. We have also included American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) fall height ratings with each product, so you can choose the product that offers the right protection for the playground surfaces you're building.

Learn how to choose the right playground mats and tiles made of different materials and available in different sizes, thicknesses, fall height protection ratings, and colors. For indoor playground floors, we have low-odor EVA foam tile flooring made just for indoor use.

Playground Flooring Mats

Fall Height Protection and Thickness
All of the playground flooring that we offer has been designed with safety in mind, but it's still important that you choose the right playground mats for your surface. Public or commercial playgrounds may usually meet specific state or local safety regulations and requirements. This is particularly common when your playground will incorporate swings, slides, or other equipment that's positioned high above the ground.

Fall height protection refers to a mats capability to help minimize head injuries that could result from a fall. Each product's fall height rating is determined by several factors, including the surface density, thickness, and construction.

Top 5 Playground Mats and Tiles with ASTM Fall Rating

  1. Bounce Back Tiles playground flooring range from 1.75 inches to 4 inches thick, and have fall height protection ratings of 3 to 10 feet. These tiles are highly durable and are backed by a 10-year warranty.
  2. Sterling Playground Tiles range from 2.25 to 5.25 inches thick. The 2.25-inch-thick tiles are rated for a 4-foot fall height. If you need more protection, a 5-inch-thick tile offers critical fall height protection of 10 feet. These tiles also carry a 10-year warranty.
  3. Blue Sky Interlocking Playground Tiles measure between 1.5 and 3.75 inches thick. The 3.75-inch-thick tile has a 10-foot fall height rating. These tiles come with a 6-year limited warranty.
  4. Our 1 5/8 inch thick EVA Foam Tiles have a 4-foot ASTM critical fall height rating which are used for indoor playgrounds.
  5. When it comes to PVC tiles, both the Staylock Perforated Tiles and Ergo Matta Perforated Outdoor Tiles are 9/16-inch thick. Both of these tiles have a 20-inch critical fall height rating, and both tiles are backed by 5-year warranties.

As you start to explore the different playground tiles and playground padding options available, begin by determining the fall height protection that you need. This one factor will help you to quickly identify which products may work for your surface, and which products are not suitable.

Rubber Playground Mats

Rubber playground tiles, which are both durable and forgiving, are a popular playground flooring option. Made from recycled rubber, usually used car and truck tires, these tiles are eco-friendly.

Rubber playground flooring offers many advantages. It's highly durable, with most rubber flooring backed by a warranty of 5 years or more. Rubber tiles have a life expectancy closer to 20 years. Rubber can be used both indoors and out; the tiles don't absorb water, so you don't have to worry about them freezing or cracking in the winter. They're also slip resistant, even when wet, which makes for a safer play area in all types of weather.

If you're considering rubber playground mats or rubber tiles for your surface, you'll be able to choose from several bright colors as well as more subdued tones. Terra cotta, red, and forest green are the most popular colors for playground mats, but we have plenty of options that will ensure you can bring your specific vision to life. With premium color mixtures, you can incorporate branding, school, or sports team colors into the design of your playground.

PVC Plastic Playground Flooring Tiles

PVC playground tiles are another popular option for indoor and outdoor playground floors. Favored for their versatility, you can purchase tiles in different hardness levels. The softer tiles, which are flexible, offer excellent cushion that makes for a comfortable surface.

Since PVC tiles give off much less odor than many rubber playground flooring options, they're frequently used for indoor installations. However, PVC tiles are also suitable for outdoor use, since they're waterproof and have a raised base. Some PVC playground mats are even UV treated, though other untreated tiles are still UV stable for 7 years.

PVC tiles that are intended for outdoor use are usually perforated, so water flows through the tile, rather than pooling on the surface. The perforation and the raised base design promotes optimum air circulation which helps to quickly dry out the tile, preventing the growth of mold and mildew. The perforated tiles are also frequently used in basements or garages, where condensation and leaks may be a concern.

For indoor use, PVC tiles with a solid surface are a great choice. These tiles usually have an added texture to improve slip resistance and increase safety.

Indoor Playground Mats

Foam interlocking playground mats continue to be a popular option for indoor playground floor installations, and with good reason. These tiles are made of a closed-cell EVA foam which helps to keep moisture, bacteria, and other impurities from penetrating the tiles, making for a healthier play environment for kids. This foam is the softest indoor playground mat option that we offer, so it makes for a forgiving, comfortable flooring. With its soft texture and its resistance to bacteria and moisture, this foam flooring is an ideal choice for spaces that will be used by infants and toddlers.

Many of our EVA foam tiles are specifically designed for use by young children. Many are equipped with a no-burn surface that won't cause friction skin burns, which can be a common problem for children who are crawling or falling on flooring. The tiles are also easy to disinfect. Regular cleaning will make for a space that is safe for even young children to crawl or play in.

Greatmats Indoor Playground Tiles are soft, forgiving, and perfect for indoor play spaces. They're available in three double-sided, double-colored options. The reversible tiles feature a different color on each side, so you can easily create fun patterns and customize your space with these tiles.

Artificial Grass Outdoor Playground Surfaces

For a more natural looking appearance, consider artificial turf and grass tiles. These products are ideal for spaces that will be used for running and jumping. Artificial turf creates a lush surface that is comfortable on bare feet, but the flooring doesn't require any of the maintenance that actual turf needs.

Please note that artificial turf makes for a beautiful play surface, but it does not offer any fall height protection. Artificial turf should not be used in play areas where climbing equipment is present.

Playground Tile Colors

With Greatmats' huge selection of playground surface options, you'll find that you have almost endless color options and design possibilities. Each product is available in certain colors, with many bright, eye-catching options available.

As you choose the colors for your playground floors, you'll want to consider the options available in the products that you plan to use. In many cases, you may be able to incorporate your branding, school, or sports team's colors for a unique appearance.

Playground Flooring Sizing and Installation

Rubber Playground Floor Tiles
When considering playground floor options, poured and loose fill surfaces as well as playground mats and tiles are frequently used. Greatmats decided to offer playground rubber mats and tiles because they are easier to install and repair, when compared to poured surfaces. If a tile or a playground rubber mat becomes damaged or worn, you can replace that single element, rather than having to repair or replace an entire flooring surface or section.

Playground rubber mats and tiles also don't need the ongoing maintenance that is associated with loose-fill materials like sand, wood chips, or rubber crumbs. Mat and tile playground floors also won't conceal hazardous objects, like broken glass, whereas it's more difficult to spot these dangers in a loose surface. Because mats and tiles are easier to maintain, you'll invest less money and time.

Rubber playground mats and tiles are available in a variety of sizes. Most playground tiles are square and interlock together to create a singular surface. Most mats are rectangular, and are usually designed to be used alone or to butt up against another mat to create a larger surface.

Most of the rubber playground tiles that we offer measure 2x2 feet, which we've found to be the ideal size for playground job. This tile size can be easily installed and transported. We advise using both the interlocking mechanism of the tiles as well as adhesives to ensure a secure, long-lasting installation. We also recommend that you hire a professional landscape contractor to ensure the safety and longevity of your playground surface. However, the 2x2 foot tiles can be installed by knowledgeable do-it-yourselfers, saving you money on installation costs.

Some of our flooring tiles feature an aluminum clip installation system to secure the tiles together. Others have interlocking tabs that are glued together. Neither of these systems require a full glue-down installation, so you'll save in both time and labor.

While rubber playground tiles are designed to create a larger, singular surface, swing and slide mats are designed with a different function in mind. These rubber playground mats are intended to help prevent ground erosion, minimizing the amount of maintenance you have to perform in high-traffic areas. These mats aren't designed to create a safe, soft, cushioned surface. Swing mats are usually much heavier than slide mats or playground tiles, so they have the weight needed to stay in place.

For outdoor playground flooring installations, we recommend that you start with a hard, flat sub-surface. A compacted and leveled crushed stone base, as well as concrete and asphalt can all work well.

Rubber playground floor intended to be outdoor playground flooring can be laid over sand, dirt, or grass, but gradually the ground beneath the tiles will begin to erode and the play surface will become uneven. Some tiles will sink, while others will not, and you'll be left with tripping hazards and low-lying areas. Water pools in these lower areas, which accelerates the ground erosion, and the problem will worsen. To avoid this situation, it's important to start with a sub-surface of compacted gravel or concrete. Though this may make for more initial work, you'll face less work and maintenance over time if you do the initial installation correctly.

Indoor installations of rubber flooring require only a hard, flat surface. The rubber tiles can be laid directly on the subfloor.

Because playground tiles are modular, you can use them for installations of nearly any size or shape. If you decide to expand the play area later on, all you have to do is add in some more tiles. Nearly all of our tiles have ramped borders (available separately), so you can create a smooth, safe transition onto and off of the play surface.

Plastic Playground Floors
PVC soft plastic playground tiles are more DIY friendly than rubber tiles. This is particularly true when you're installing them over a hard, flat indoor surface. Measuring mostly 1x1 foot, the tiles are easy to maneuver and include tab and loop connectors for a simple and fast installation. We also offer PVC tiles for playground floors which are 1.67x.83-foot rectangles.

PVC playground flooring tiles don't require any adhesives, so installation is simple and DIY-friendly. If you're installing the tiles over an irregular surface like sand, grass, or dirt, PVC tiles are the best option to create a clean, finished, kid-friendly surface.

PVC playground floor tiles have ramped borders available to reduce tripping hazards.

Be sure not to install indoor foam playground tiles on top of rough surfaces, since the sub-surface can damage the tiles.
