2x2 foot interlocking foam floor tiles are possibly the easiest form of flooring to install. All you need is a tape measure, sharp utility knife and a straight edge.

Make sure you begin with a clean floor. Start in a corner and leave at least a 1/4 inch gap between the tiles and walls for tile expansion. Push the tiles together like a puzzle, working your way out evenly from the corner until you can no longer fit full tiles.

Then measure the distance remaining between the tiles and walls. Cut your remaining tiles using a sharp utility knife to fit accordingly, being sure to use a straight edge guide. Cut the majority of the way through the tiles on one side. Then fold the mat at the cut to expose the core.

Cut the rest of the way through from the other side by keeping the tile mostly folded and following the crease from the inside. Then lay the cut tiles to fit flush with the remaining walls – minus your gap for expansion.

Many of these tiles come with border strips, allowing for a finished edge even if the flooring is not surrounded by walls.
