Greatmats is proud to offer a wide variety of options, all designed to create a safe playground flooring for your facility. Our surface options include rubber and soft PVC materials, while foam indoor playground surfaces are also available for indoor play. All of our outdoor playground tiles feature an ASTM Fall Height Rating and offer a non-slip surface to create safe playground surfaces.

Our outdoor rubber tile options feature both straight edges and interlocking edges. Some tiles can be installed without the use of adhesives, while others may need to be glued down. Please refer to the individual product descriptions for more detailed information on the specific safety playground surface installation.

Consider the following benefits of our playground surface options:

  • Specially designed products create safe playground surfaces
  • ASTM fall height ratings for each product ensure you can meet construction and safety requirements
  • Durable surface options are designed to withstand serious use, maximizing your investment
  • A variety of installation method means you can choose a surface that's right for your project

Choosing the best type of playground surface depends on how and where the product will be used.

  1. Will the playground surface be used indoors or outdoors?
  2. How heavy and what type of traffic will be on the surface?
  3. How tall is your playground equipment?
  4. How much fall height protection will you need?
  5. Will you need professional installation or do you plan to do it yourself?
  6. If indoors, will boots, shoes, socks, or bare feet be used on the surface?
  7. How much time and money do you have for maintenance?
  8. How soon do you need your playground surface tiles?
  9. Do you have a color scheme you need to match?

All of these questions play a critical role in deciding which playground surface will best fit your needs.

Fall Height Protection and Other Features

Before you choose a surface product for your playground, you first need to determine the fall height present in the play area. To determine the fall height, measure the height from the ground to the highest platform that children use. Once you have this measurement, you can choose the correct playground tile or surface.

Our most popular indoor and outdoor playground product is the 2.5 inch thick rubber tile. Best installed over asphalt or concrete, the material provides a generous fall height rating of six feet. For a fall height rating greater than eight feet, you will need to use thicker rubber flooring tiles.

Since these rubber playground surface create a solid, stable surface, they are guaranteed for wheelchair accessibility. Many of our outdoor rubber playground products include ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant edge ramps. Transition ramps are available in numerous thicknesses, and come with corner pieces so you can create a fully accessible playground space. Outdoor Rubber Playground Surfaces

If you're working with outdoor playground equipment that is taller than 20 inches, a rubber playground surface tile is necessary. Unlike rubber crumb and other loose fill options, rubber playground tiles are designed to maintain a reliable fall height rating. Playground surface tiles do not shift and therefore maintain the same thickness and composition throughout their useful life as they did the day they were installed.

Interlocking rubber playground tiles create a quality playground surface this is durable and safe. They are a longer lasting alternative to wood, chips, sand, or loose crumb surface products that are often used as an attempt to cut costs. Additionally, rubber playground tiles are much easier to install or repair than poured rubber surfaces.

Another benefit of using rubber tiles is that they will not dissipate over time. Loose fill options have a tendency to spill outside the confines of the playground area, sink into soil, and find their way into pockets, footwear, and other areas where the material will be carried away from its intended area. Because of this, loose fill will need to be steadily replenished, whereas rubber mats require little to no maintenance. Rubber tiles will not hide hazards, such as broken glass or other sharp objects, like loose fill will. Overall, a rubber safety surface makes for a safer play area.

Rubber interlocking playground tiles are available in a variety of shades and colors. The in-stock colors are highly resistant to fading, even when under the effects of direct sunlight. Color options usually come in color fleck variations, since most rubber safety surfacing tiles are made from ground, recycled tires.

These tiles are also available in varying thicknesses. As a general rule, thicker rubber playground surfaces provide better fall protection than thinner options.

Most rubber safety surfacing tiles measure approximately 2x2 feet in size. The size is convenient enough so that the tiles can be easily handled and installed. These tiles are designed to maintain fall protection, as well as excellent water drainage. Certain playground surface solutions can also be used over decks and rooftops, or any exterior in need of a strong, protective rubber surfacing. Some of the tiles can be set using a glue-down application. Other tiles are interlocking, and require only a small amount of adhesive. Contact a customer service representative for help with choosing the best option.

Our Blue Sky line of interlocking tile playground surfaces range from 1.5 to 3.75 inches thick. The Sterling line of rubber tiles are available in 1.25 to 5 inch thicknesses and are often used on rooftops. Bounce Back Mats range from 1.75 to 4 inches in thickness and provide fall height protection from 3 to 10 feet, depending on the thickness.

For proper installation, rubber playground tiles need to be placed over a concrete or compacted gravel sub surface. Be sure to consult a Greatmats sales representative to determine if the product warranty is affected by the sub surface that you will be using. Some manufacturers allow a crushed gravel surface, while others require concrete for their products in order to honor the product warranty.

In short, rubber safety surfacing interlocking tiles provide the following benefits:

  • Tiles maintain a reliable fall height rating
  • Tiles don't hide potential safety issues, like broken glass, like loose fill does
  • Rubber safety surfaces require less maintenance than loose fill
  • Tiles stay in place once installed, and are conveniently sized for easy installation
  • A range of thickness options ensures you can choose a product that meets your needs
  • Color is resistant to the effects of direct sunlight
  • If a tile is damaged, you only have to replace that single tile, rather than an entire surface

Soft PVC Playground Surfaces

If you're working with a playground with relatively low equipment, then you may want to consider our Staylock Perforated tiles. These tiles create safe playground surfaces for toddlers, both indoors and out. Made from soft PVC, these flexible tiles are UV-treated for long-term use. With a fall height rating of 20 inches, the Staylock tiles are a great choice when you're not dealing with tall equipment.

Staylock tiles snap together for easy installation and can be dry laid directly over dirt or grass. They are flexible enough to handle slightly uneven surfaces, and make for a great DIY project. With a perforated surface and a raised base, the tiles allow for maximum airflow to maintain as dry a surface as possible, even in the wettest conditions.

Consider the benefits of these PVC tiles:

  • Soft tiles create a forgiving surface perfect for toddlers
  • 20-inch fall height rating is appropriate for use with low equipment
  • Snap-together design makes for easy installation
  • Tiles are flexible enough to handle slightly uneven surfaces, and can be dry laid over dirt or grass
  • Perforated tile surface and raised base maintains as dry a surface as possible

Indoor Playground Surfaces

When choosing a product to create safe playground surfaces indoors, high density foam products work well. Our foam indoor floor tiles are much softer than rubber playground surfaces, creating a more comfortable play area than your standard outdoor playground. Foam indoor tiles are available in multiple fall height ratings, depending on the tile's style. Find foam indoor playground surface options on our Indoor Playground Flooring category page.

Our most common 1 5/8 inch thick foam indoor playground tiles feature a 4 foot fall height rating. These tiles feature a no-burn tatami top texture, which helps to avoid knee and elbow burns when falls do occur. These tiles create a comfortable surface for kids to play on, but they have not been UV treated and should not be used outdoors.

Indoor play surfaces offer the following benefits:

  • Softer, more comfortable play surface than outdoor tiles
  • Fall height protection ratings provide safety
  • Many foam tiles feature no-burn surfaces to help avoid surface burns
  • Tile design is easy to install and transport
