Exercise Floors Top 4 Questions

1. What should I look for when buying high quality exercise flooring?

It's important to first determine which type of exercise the mats will be used for. Key areas to consider are hardness, size and expansion possibilities. Craftsmanship also plays a big role, so comparing warranties is a good place to start.

2. Are there exercise-specific exercise floor mats?

Absolutely! Although many mats can serve multiple purposes. Size, thickness, surface textures and installation methods can all be customized to fit the needs for specific exercises.

3. What's the best cleaning solution for clean exercise mats?

Most foam, plastic or vinyl exercise mats can be cleaned using common household cleaners. Rubber exercise mats should be cleaned with neutral pH cleaners, avoiding solvent or oil-based cleaners.

4. What size should an exercise mat be?

Again, this depends greatly on the type of exercise. For most personal exercises such as sit up, you'll want a mat large enough to support from your tailbone to your head. For combat sports, you'll need enough room for basic moves. If you are exercising with a partner, take that into consideration as well.

Exercise Flooring over Carpeting

For a durable and cushioned floor which can be installed over carpet, choose one of our Staylock modular gym floor mats. Made of a soft polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic material, they will not slide or separate over carpeting. Staylock mats provide great cushion for aerobic activities and will hold up well beneath exercise equipment, including free weight benches and racks.

Greatmats' Staylock modular exercise floor tile features a bump top or orange peel surface texture in popular designer colors. This flooring will provide durability and cushion in the form of an easy-to-install tile that will last for years of commercial use and comes with a 5-year limited warranty. Consider this product in bump top for the best anti-fatigue ergonomic benefits for high intensity cardio and aerobic training. The orange peel surface is popular in home exercise room floors for an upscale look.

For a wood grain look in your exercise room floor, consider our Max Tile raised floor tiles. This durable snap-together exercise floor tile features a commercial grade vinyl tile surface in popular wood and slate designs. Use a 3mm rubber underlayment with this exercise flooring for added cushion when installed for commercial athletic applications or on top of concrete floors. Max Tile is the best type of vinyl top snap together exercise floor on the market because of its commercial grade vinyl and the durable snap together design. It also comes with a 5-year limited warranty.

Foam Exercise Mats

If you're looking for a workout floor that's comfortable and forgiving, then our foam tiles may be the right choice. Foam tiles make for the softest flooring options available, and are preferred for cardio, martial arts, and other aerobic activities.

Foam tiles provide cushion and thermal insulation, but they're also incredibly easy to transport and install.

Foam interlocking puzzle tiles offer a safe, soft, and cushioned workout floor that can be used for aerobics, floor stretches, and cardio workouts. Foam is a popular option for basement flooring, because the tiles can be installed directly over concrete floors but can be easily removed in the case of a leak or floor.

Generally, foam mats are intended for foot traffic only. However, some specialty foam tiles are designed to withstand athletic shoes or boots. While you can install foam under home exercise equipment, the flooring can become permanently indented by heavier equipment. Treadmills or weight benches left in place for long periods of time can cause these lasting indentations on this exercise flooring

Folding Gym Exercise Floors

Vinyl wrapped gym exercise mats are perfect for floor workouts. The most common form vinyl covered fitness mats are folding or panel mats. These are the perfect solution for exercise that includes rolling or falling such as tumbling, gymnastics, wrestling and cheerleading.

The Home Sport and Play mat is one of our most popular foam exercise products. It is comfortable for floor exercises, stretching, and sit ups. Lead and latex free with little to no odor, these foam floors are kid safe and perfect for any indoor space and feature a scuff-resistant thatch surface texture.

For commercial foam exercise floors, we recommend our larger 1x1 meter interlocking foam flooring options that will provide a long-lasting and durable exercise room floor type for multipurpose applications. These mats give you the versatility of interlocking tiles with much fewer seams than traditional home puzzle mats.

One of Greatmats' newest fitness flooring options is called Home Gym Mats Pebble 10 mm. This interlocking floor tile is made of high density ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) foam material and features a durable stone or pebble top surface design. 10 mm home gym pebble mats can be installed underneath exercise equipment and is great for home use as basement flooring. Install the foam tile on any hard, flat surface such as tile or concrete. Durable and wear resistant, this foam flooring will last for years in residential installations and comes with a 1 year limited warranty.

Rubber Exercise Flooring

Use rubber exercise floors for under weight equipment and cardio workout equipment or in commercial exercise floor installations. Rubber flooring is available in rolled rubber material and interlocking gym floor mats. Rubber is usually used to protect flooring from heavy equipment. It is hard like a car tire and is, therefore, not ideal for floor exercises without a personal exercise floor mat. Choose an individual exercise floor mat for stretching or yoga.

The happy medium for a room where equipment and aerobic flooring activities will take place is a soft plastic flooring, such as our Staylock PVC tiles, or a plyometric rubber.

Rolled rubber flooring tends to be a great option for large areas. It's a more economical solution for wide-open exercise floors, and results in fewer seams than smaller tiles create.

Installing Exercise Mats

Installation of our exercise floors can be an easy do-it-yourself (DIY) project with interlocking plastic, vinyl, foam and rubber mats that easily connect for a seemingly seamless fit. Interlocking exercise floor tiles do not require any glue or tape and can be installed on any hard, flat surface. Rolls of rubber are recommended to be taped down for home installations and glued down for larger commercial installations. Foam floor mats are not recommended to be installed over carpeting as they may slip.

Cleaning and care of exercise flooring can be accomplished with common floor cleaners. Always use a neutral pH cleaner on rubber flooring materials for a long wear and useful life. They can also simply be swept and vacuumed. Test your vacuum on foam exercise room flooring to prevent damage.

Shipping of exercise flooring for commercial applications is generally via freight delivery due to size and/or weight of the product. Home exercise room flooring can be shipped via ground service to your door for smaller 1x1- and 2x2-foot floor tiles.

Temporary exercise floor options for small areas include our folding gym mats, workout roll out mats, and Airex exercise mats. We also offer carpet tiles for gyms, such as our Dominator LP Gym Carpet Tiles which are made of dyed polypropylene with a bitumen backing. They are permanently anti-static and carry a 5-year limited warranty.
