Rubber Flooring Tiles: Gym, Decking, Playground and Home Use
Greatmats offers hundreds of varieties of rubber tiles for both indoor and outdoor applications. These tiles are frequently used indoors for gym floors, auditorium flooring, and event center floors. For outdoor areas, tiles made of rubber are extremely popular as patio, rooftop, and playground flooring. They are durable products designed to protect subfloors from heavy furniture, exercise equipment, and weights, and rubber flooring can also help to protect children from falls on the playground.
Benefits of Rubber Tile Mats
When you consider the many benefits of rubber tile mats, it's easy to see why they're so popular:
- Conveniently sized, these tiles can be easily transported and installed
- Most tiles require no adhesive, making installation a simple DIY project
- Rubber is extremely durable and will last for years, even in harsh outdoor environments
- Rubber is eco-friendly; many of these products are made from recycled car and truck tires, keeping trash out of the landfills
We've outlined some of our most popular tile options below to help you get started.
Indoor Rubber Tiles
There are many ways to use rubber tiles indoors. Most commonly, indoor rubber flooring is used in gym and athletic spaces. Because rubber is highly durable and strong, it can protect your subfloor from dropped weights and can even be used beneath heavy gym equipment. It's the perfect option for high-traffic areas, and since it's economical and long-lasting, rubber is a popular option for indoor flooring projects.
Rubber tiles indoors for athletic and gym floors are offered in thicknesses ranging from 1/4 inch to 1 inch. Interlocking rubber tiles are available in recycled black content and color fleck options. DIY residential installers will appreciate these convenient and durable tiles due to the ease of installation and limited waste. Commercial installers and contractors will often choose these tiles, not only for convenient installation, but also for durability and LEED benefits, as many of these tiles are made from recycled materials.
Rubber sports flooring is most commonly sold in 2x2, 3x3 or 4x4-foot tiles. Connection methods vary by product. The most common athletic tiles feature an interlocking (puzzle) edge, but straight-edge floor tiles are also available.
Gym and athletic rubber tiles are offered in many colors including 100 percent recycled black, 10 and 20 percent color fleck and 100 percent full color rubber tiles. Custom tiles are available by request with minimum order quantities. For most installations, you will not need adhesive to install your indoor rubber flooring.
Consider our BestGym rubber floor tile for a full-color look. Most tiles are made primarily of black rubber with differing percentages of color flecks, but BestGym rubber tiles give you seven 100 percent color options.
If you are looking for vibrant colors, our MX Outdoor Premium rubber tile may be something to consider. This tile is available in eight color options, including Grape Slushie, Lemonade, and Orangsicle!
Our UltraTile Rubber Weight Floor feature an easy connector pin installation method. They are available in several designer colors and create a professional weight room floor that is second to none. UltraTiles are a full one inch thick which provides maximum floor protection from free weights and equipment.
While rubber tiles indoors are made from an extremely dense material, certain environments, such as those with high heat or humidity, may cause them to expand slightly. It is often advised to allow 1/8 to 1/4 inch of space around the perimeter of you rubber floor to accommodate this expansion and prevent buckling of the tiles.
Outdoor Rubber Tiles
Outdoor rubber tiles are made of recycled rubber material. They are highly durable and are manufactured to withstand even the harshest elements for years. Tiles can handle sub-zero temperatures, ice, and snow in northern climates, as well as the prolonged sunshine of southern areas. This durability and versatility makes tiles an excellent investment.
Rubber paver tiles can be installed with either a pin connection system, tile clips, or a glue-down installation. They are designed to keep water from pooling on top of the pavers. Outdoor tiles can generally be installed over any flat surface including crushed stone, concrete, wood, and the like. They should not, however, be installed directly over dirt or grass. Pavers create an aesthetically pleasing flooring option which remains safe even in the rain, snow, or ice.
Patio rubber floor tiles are available in 1/2, 3/4 and 1 inch thickness and are intended for use on patios, decks, and outdoor sport areas. Outdoor patio tiles are usually a straight-edge tile. However, some do feature interlocking tabs for an easy connection system, and are great for rooftop applications where a glue-down installation is not desired.
Because patio tiles are easy to install, they can make a great DIY project for homeowners. This is especially true for tiles that use connector pins. Patio tiles have the benefit of being small enough to easily transport and install, yet heavy enough to keep from being affected by strong winds or heavy rains.
For playground installations, Greatmats offers outdoor tiles with fall-height ratings of up to 10 feet. There are playground tiles designed for both outdoor and indoor installations. Indoor tiles generally have less odor than outdoor tiles. Both require hard, flat surfaces for installation, and are designed to provide a clean and safe play surface for children. Choose these tiles for areas where kids will be playing on playground equipment or other places where falling is a concern. Use landscape fabric under your outdoor playground tiles for best results when installing over crushed stone. This will prevent weeds and grass from growing between the tiles.
Made from recycled tires, these tiles are firm, rugged, and durable. They will not break down, freeze, or melt under extreme weather conditions. This material provides excellent shock, sound, and thermal insulation at a fraction of the cost of many other home and commercial flooring materials. Recycled rubber provides an excellent non-slip surface that will provide additional safety to both the floor underneath and the humans above, especially in areas of high activity. While most of these tiles feature a 1 to 15-year warranty, many of them have been known to last for decades under normal use.
Whether you are building a playground, remodeling a home gym, or upgrading your horse barn, rubber tile mats will not disappoint. The convenient size cuts down on weight concerns when transporting and installing flooring made of heavy duty rubber. Why not benefit from the comfort, durability, and stylish benefits of rubber tiles?
Cleaning and Installation
Rubber tile mats are easy to clean. To clean outdoor tiles, simply just spray them off with a garden hose or power washer. Indoor tiles can be swept clean, and then mopped with water and a mild household cleanser. Refer to the product description of the particular tile that you're using for detailed care and maintenance instructions.
How to Cut Rubber Tiles
- Mark cut line with a pen.
- Slide a 2x4 board under tile at line.
- Align straight edge with cutting line.
- Cut along straight edge with sharp utility knife using series of shallow scores, allowing tile to fold over edge of 2x4, opening the cut until all the way through.
Rubber tile mats ship via common carrier freight truck. If you do not have a commercial dock and a way to unload the product from the back of the truck, we will provide a lift gate at delivery. The lift gate will lower pallets to the ground at your location. Be sure to discuss this with your representative at time of order. Please contact one of our customer service representatives for more information.
