  2. Determine the size of space your home gym flooring will need to cover.
  3. Distinguish which is more important - durability or cushion.
  4. Identify what type of surface the home gym flooring will be installed over.
  5. Establish whether the home gym flooring will need to endure dropped weights and protect against falls.
If you are like most homeowners, building a home gym is a project that you'd like to be able to accomplish on your own. Greatmats home gym flooring is high quality and functional, and in most cases, it's flooring that you can install yourself.

Consider the following benefits of home gym flooring

  • A home gym floor can convert nearly any space, including a basement or garage, into a home gym.
  • Gym flooring protects your subfloor from damage from gym equipment and excessive wear and tear.
  • Home gym flooring provides a comfortable workout space, reducing the effects of jumping or other high-impact activities.
  • Many flooring types provide thermal regulation, so you won't feel the effect of cold concrete floors.
  • Home gym mats can provide the extra protection and shock absorption needed for weightlifting areas.
As you're looking at flooring for home gym use, the above tips can help you to choose the right product for your gym. You'll also want to consider the installation methods that you're comfortable with.

What is the best flooring for a home gym?

There's no simple answer to this question as home gyms can be used for anything from weight lifting to aerobics to martial arts or gymnastics. So we'll break this down a little by usage. As a general rule, home gyms for weightlifting commonly prefer some form or rubber flooring. Interlocking rubber tiles are the most convenient form for this purpose. For gyms intended for things such as martial arts, gymnastics or aerobics, different versions foam flooring are most popular. This can be in the form of puzzle mats, roll out mats or folding mats.

Installation is a big factor for home gyms. Many of our products, such as interlocking tiles or home gym mats, are designed to be easy to transport and install. As you look at gym flooring, you may want to consider whether the flooring requires adhesive for permanent installation.

Available in interlocking tiles, rubber flooring rolls, and mats designed for easy installation, you'll find a variety of flooring options perfect for home gyms, game rooms, family rooms and more.

Let's take a look at a few home gym flooring ideas to get you started.

Interlocking Home Gym Floors

Interlocking tiles reduce the awkward handling of large, bulky materials that is standard with large-scale installations. These products are popular options for home gyms thanks to their convenience, and the fact that often no adhesives are required, making for a fast and easy installation. They can be dry laid and cut to fit any sized home gym floor. This means you can custom cut them to fit around pillars and other structural elements. Additionally, these interlocking floors can be removed as easily as they were installed.

If you'd like an interlocking flooring, consider:

  • Interlocking rubber tiles
  • Foam tiles or puzzle mats
  • Gym floor carpets
  • Ergonomic PVC gym floor tiles
  • Firm polypropylene floor tiles
  • Vinyl surface tiles or rolls
  • Folding or Roll Out Gym Mats

Folding and Roll Out Gym Floors

If you're looking for a convenient and temporary flooring option, then folding and roll out gym floors may be the perfect solution. Rollout or folding home gym floor mats cover large areas, leave fewer seams than interlocking tiles, and some mats can be laid down in just seconds.

Most gym mats come in 4 to 6-foot widths, and are available in lengths of 8 feet and longer. You can connect multiple mats together using tape or hook and loop connectors.

While rollout and folding gym mats are excellent options if you want to be able to use your room for multiple purposes, they aren't as easy to customize to the size and shape of your room as interlocking tiles. You may not be able to cut rollout and folding home gym mats, depending on their construction. Folding Mats are made of a vinyl wrapped foam core which should not be cut.

Roll out mats and flooring can be made of foam or rubber. Foam versions feature either a carpeted or vinyl surface. Rubber rolls are significantly, thinner, heavier and much harder.

If your gym will house heavyweight equipment, then a rubber gym floor is a must. Foam floors, which are soft and durable, are a better choice for aerobic exercises where body-to-floor contact is common, such as jumping, throwing, tumbling, falling, etc. But in weight rooms where heavy weights will be used, durable rubber flooring is a better option because of its excellent strength and shock absorption.

Rubber rolls are an excellent choice when you want to cover a large area with minimal seams. Rubber mats can add increased shock absorption and protection to areas of your gym which will see heavy use, such as those used for weightlifting.

Rubber Home Gym Flooring

Rubber tiles, mats and rolls of rubber for home gym floors are frequently used as a durable flooring under heavy weight equipment and free weights. This gym flooring will last for years and is backed by 1 to 10 year warranties. Rubber flooring provides excellent impact absorption, protecting your subfloor from dropped weights and easing some impact on bones and joints from unforgiving concrete surfaces. Additionally, rubber provides sound and thermal buffering, making for a more enjoyable workout space.

Rubber flooring tiles are available in all black, black with color fleck, and in full-color rubber flooring tiles. Black rubber is made from recycled rubber and is environmentally friendly. Color fleck options in 10 or 20 percent colors consist of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) colored rubber materials and are available in 2x2-, 3x3- and 4x4-foot squares, as well as other interlocking tile sizes.

Greatmats carries nearly all of the interlocking rubber tiles available on the market.

If you'd like a unique color design, or a mix of more than one color in your flooring, consider custom rubber flooring tiles. Because interlocking tiles have a lower minimum order quantity than rolled rubber, they provide plenty of opportunity for custom colors and designs. With a little customization, you can create a gym floor in a unique color scheme.

Rubber rolls will cover larger areas with fewer seams. However, they are available in just a few thickness options. If you'll be using rolled rubber under Olympic lift spaces, then you will need multiple layers to provide enough protection against the heavy weights being dropped.

Because rubber rolls are large and dense, they're also heavy and will require multiple people to move them. Installation generally requires multiple people.

Large rubber mats are a common solution for Olympic lifting areas. These mats are often about 4x6 feet in size and are available in various thickness. The thicker the mat, the more protection it provides against dropped weights. For most Olympic lifts, it is recommended that the rubber mats be at least 3/4 inch thick. These mats are quite heavy - generally around 100 pounds.

Aerobic Home Gym Flooring

If you're looking for home gym flooring ideas for aerobics, then we recommend our high-density foam floor tiles or plyometric rubber rolls. These versatile aerobic flooring products work great for a home gym floor because they provide more cushion and fatigue relief than standard rubber can provide. Additionally, plyometric rubber rolls are perfect for P90X (Power 90 Extreme) and free weight style exercise, since they are more durable than foam tiles.

Our pebble top foam gym floor tiles combine durability with a high density foam designed for home gym use. These tiles feature a non-slip surface that is great for aerobic exercises. The pebble top foam gym floor tiles are one of the rare foam flooring options that can withstand the weight of exercise equipment. Double-sided and reversible, you are sure to get plenty of use out of these tiles.

Economical and Cushioned Foam Home Gym Flooring

Need a comfortable yet cost-effective gym flooring option? We have multiple products that will suit your needs.

Foam home gym flooring is a great customizable option if you're looking to truly take control of the look of your home gym. The tiles accommodate endless design options and are available in multiple surface textures. Premium 5/8-inch foam tile and 7/8-inch thick Home Sport and Play Mats are two of our most popular products. These foam tiles and play mats are an excellent value, and are an ideal solution for kids' playrooms, exercise rooms and home aerobic or floor exercise activities. They're comfortable and available in bright colors, and you can't beat how easy they are to install or clean. The play mats offer excellent shock absorption, and are a popular choice for combat sport training. These mats are durable enough to withstand use while wearing shoes or boots.

If your gym will be used for wrestling, martial arts, boxing or similar activities, we also offer a large variety of cushioning foam home gym flooring customized to work best with your sport of choice. Some options feature a no-burn tatami surface to help protect your skin from friction burns. Others are scuff resistant and can accommodate shoes and boots.

For extra cushion, consider folding home gym mats, which can be connected together and/or folded in panels for a truly versatile temporary gym flooring option.

Plastic Home Gym Flooring

Perfect for damp basements is our StayLock modular floor tile. This innovative soft PVC tile is made of non-absorbent plastic and features an elevated sub-structure. The elevated sub-structure allows air and moisture to freely circulate, helping to reduce mold and mildew buildup. It's a great fit for damp basements or other areas where moisture can be a challenge, and you won't have to worry about pulling the flooring up to dry if it gets wet - it takes care of that on its own.

This soft PVC tile is designed to offer a durable, yet cushioned, floor surface in designer colors.

StayLock tiles are available in bump top or orange peel surface textures. The bump top surface texture will provide more fatigue and cushion relief for aerobic activities while the orange peel surface features a smoother look and feel. There is also a perforated Staylock Tile option for areas of increased moisture.

Home Gym Floor Installation

The installation method for your gym flooring will depend on the type of flooring that you choose.

Rubber rolls are heavy and installation will generally require multiple people.

Interlocking floor tiles do not require glue or tape for installation, and you can even pick them up to remove the floor or to clean beneath it. Rubber, foam, or plastic interlocking tiles can be cut with a utility knife and a straight edge for wall-to-wall installation.
