Indoor Foam Safety Mats for Playgrounds and Other Play Areas

By Greatmats Staff Created: June, 2017 - Modified: July, 2023

A safe indoor play space for kids starts with safe flooring, and that’s what our Indoor Playground Flooring Tiles deliver. These tiles measure 1x1 meter and are 1 5/8 inches thick, giving them the ability to provide superior cushion. These tiles have a no-burn surface, so kids can tumble, roughhouse, and play without risk of skinned elbows and knees. These high-density foam safety mats are rated to handle four-foot falls without expectation of serious head injuries, a must-have feature for a safe indoor playground.

These indoor safety mats are waterproof, so they can be easily cleaned with a damp mop, making them easy to maintain. They’re available in five colors and include three reversible, double-sided puzzle tiles. By alternating which side of the tile faces up, you can create fun patterns and designs.

These tiles are also easy to install. To create an interlocking foam indoor playhouse flooring, start in the corner of the area that you want to cover and press the tiles together, connecting the seams like you’d put together puzzle pieces. The seams interlock together tightly and disappear from view, leaving behind a cohesive, finished floor surface.

Each tile comes with four border strips, allowing for a smooth edge installation along walls, or for an island installation within a room that features smooth, finished edges. Ramped border strips are available separately.

You can also cut these tiles to fit your room, or to fit around objects like support posts. Use a sharp utility knife to repeatedly score the tile until you work your way through it. If you’re making a straight cut, then use a straight edge to help guide the cut.

While these tiles are durable, they can still become damaged or stained, and that’s why the modular tile design is so helpful. If a tile is damaged, you can remove and replace that one tile, rather than replacing your entire floor. This makes for valuable money-saving benefits and also keeps the play space operational and looking great.

These versatile tiles are suitable for many uses. They’re ideal for churches, schools, recreational departments, youth organizations, and more. They’re also affordable enough to be a practical option for households with playrooms.

Alternative Foam Playground Tiles

Greatmats’ Indoor Playground Flooring Tiles offer many benefits, but we also offer several other foam playground flooring options that offer the durability needed to withstand heavy traffic and use. These indoor mats range from ½ inch to 1.5 inches thick, offering varying degrees of cushion and shock absorption. They offer a soft feel and plenty of durability, but most this playground foam hasn’t been tested for critical fall heights.

These products can make an ideal indoor foam playground surface on a budget. Our selection of EVA foam puzzle mats includes features like a no-skin burn surface, scuff-resistant texture, and more.

These mats are available in two sizes – 2x2 foot squares and 1x1 meter squares. The thicker varieties are ideal as safety mats for indoor play areas and as martial arts mats.

These indoor safety mats include:
  1. Home BJJ Mats (1.5 inch thick)
  2. Judo Jiu Jitsu Mats (1.25 inch thick)
  3. Martial Arts Karate Mat Premium (1 inch thick)
  4. Home Sport and Play Mat (0.75 inch thick)
  5. Foam Kids and Gym Mats (.6 inch thick)
  6. Pro Taekwondo Martial Arts Mats (20 mm thick)

You might also consider rubber play mats indoor surfaces, but these tend to have less cushion and lack the no-burn surface textures of many foam mats. Foam is, far and above, the most popular option for indoor play spaces, and that’s because of its excellent functionality and the many benefits it offers to kids.

Are foam play mats toxic?

We make every effort to ensure that the foam play mats we sell are safe for kids. EVA foam tiles don’t contain PVC material, so they’re free of phthalates.
Formamide-free EVA tiles don’t exist, but the formamide does dissipate after time, so a manufacturer can test their tiles a few months after they’re manufactured to get a test result that states the tile is free of formamide. The manufacturer of our EVA foam tiles has provided us a test that states that one sample of an EVA foam tile passed a test that states the sample was free of formamide. We don’t then state that all of our EVA foam tiles are formamide free, for the reasons explained above. However, we source from the largest manufacturer of EVA foam tiles in the world and personally visit the factory each year.

What are foam mats made of?

Greatmats’ indoor playground flooring tiles are made of ethylene-vinyl acetate. This foam is waterproof, offers shock absorption properties, and is also durable.

How do you disinfect a foam mat?

You can disinfect foam mats by spraying them with a mix of water and vinegar. Alternatively, you can use highly diluted bleach.
