Tucker’s Treehouse Creates a Calm Room with Floor Mats & Wall Pads

Navigating grief is a tremendous challenge for children, and sometimes those intense emotions spill over and need a safe space for release. A calm room can provide that necessary safety, allowing kids to express their emotions and move around without risk of injury. But finding the right calm room padding is paramount to creating a safe space, and that’s a challenge that one nonprofit recently solved by working with Greatmats.

Finding the Right Calm Room Padding

Kaylee, a Board member and volunteer at Tucker’s Treehouse in Owensboro, Kentucky, explains that the organization serves a very special purpose in the community. “Tucker's Treehouse provides children and teens a space to care for and comfort one another during seasons of grief and loss,” she says. The organization accomplishes that goal through peer groups, creative play, and compassionate support for children and teens.

Tucker’s Treehouse became a 501(c)(3) in 2025, and recently transformed a small storage closet into a calm room, bringing a vision of a volcano room to life. “The Volcano Room serves as a safe emotional release space for children experiencing the intense emotions that often come with grief,” says Kaylee.

The room features padded walls and floors, so children can safely express big feelings. “It gives them a place where they can be loud, hit the walls, move their bodies, and play with one another in a safe and supportive environment,” Kaylee explains. “The goal of the Volcano Room is to help children release built-up emotions in a healthy way while learning that it is okay to feel and express those feelings.”

To create the Volcano Room, the Tucker’s Treehouse team needed to identify quality wall and floor padding that would provide the level of shock absorption, durability, and safety needed. Installing and Creating the Volcano Room

And, thanks to the option to order custom wall pads, Tucker’s Treehouse was able to order special pads that truly completed the room. “We loved being able to customize the image on the mat to create the perfect volcano look,” says Kaylee.

Kaylee says that the installation was very smooth; the team installed the products themselves. Additionally, the installation process was efficient, and the mats arrived quickly despite the project’s large size.
