Dance Floor Size Recommendations for Events

When thinking of successful social events such as weddings, company parties, reunions, and more, you likely think about the entertainment. What can often make or break a party is the quality of the band or DJ and how much action and value they add! When planning an event, your favorite venue may not have a dance floor. That doesn’t necessarily mean it can’t still provide for the event of your dreams! It may simply mean that you need to rent or buy one. You may question whether you actually need a special floor for the dance. Well, if you are hiring a professional DJ and want your guests to have an enjoyable time, the answer is “yes”. It’s really no fun dancing in the dirt or on someone’s lawn while wearing heels or dress shoes.

When considering flooring options, you will need to either buy a portable event floor or, find a rental company that provides portable flooring. You may be asking yourself, “What type of floor and what size of floor will make the most sense?”

If you or someone you know is a performance dancer, such as a participant in tap, lyrical, jazz, or ballet, or, if you are a dance instructor, you may have a need for a different type of portable dance floor. Again, you are likely wondering what type of flooring options are available, as well as the size of floor space required to meet your needs.

The Size

Rosco Dance Floor Reversible 5.25 Ft x 131.3 FtRegardless of the type of dance floor and the purpose it will serve, Greatmats recommends 9 square feet of flooring per person. You want to provide enough room for your dancers to be able to move and groove freely without feeling over-crowded. We find the 9-square-foot rule to be the sizing sweet spot.

Obviously, if you are providing flooring for a dance studio or performance area, you can assume that all participants will be dancing – making it easier to know the exact square footage needed. For example, if you have 10 students in a tap dance class, you will need 90 square feet of tap dance flooring.

Determining the amount of flooring needed for a social event, such as a wedding reception, may not be as simple. It is said that on average, you can assume that about 40 percent of your wedding guests will be dancing at one time. You know your guest list and their social behaviors better than anyone else does, but 40 percent is a general rule of thumb.

There are a few things to take into consideration, however. For instance, what age group do the majority of your wedding guests fall into? If you are accommodating a younger crowd who would tend to dance the night away, you may have to bump that 40 percent up. Alternatively, if the majority of your guests are elderly, they may be more comfortable sitting on a nice white chair and enjoying some social time at a table. In that case, you may reduce the number below 40 percent. However, if you have a guest list that is a blend of all ages, 40 percent is a safe bet. So, if you have 200 guests attending your wedding and you use our suggested 9 square feet per person rule, you would want 720 square feet of dance floor space. (40 percent of 200 is 80 x 9 = 720)
