Let's discuss having the correct size . You want to make sure that you have enough room, depending on the size of your horse, for them to be able to sit and make a nice turn. If you have enough room coming into your barrel, your turn will be a lot tighter coming out, which is what you want to set yourself up for your next turn. The distance between your barrel and your horse needs to be about half of the distance of your total horse.

If you're not sure where to approach your barrel, take your horse to your barrel. Stand them straight and take half of their length; turn them away; and that gives you your pocket to your barrel.

Also make sure their hip is in towards the barrel for your pocket. That will keep them sitting on their butt and leaving forward.
