For the last decade, 13-year-old Addison Barnard has dedicated a lot of time and energy into learning ballet as well contemporary, jazz, Latin and ballroom dancing. Training at Dancenter in the small town of Capitola, California, Addison is a part of Dancenter’s Company Troupe and was recently awarded a scholarship to New Ballet in San Jose. She also has plans to train at San Francisco Ballet.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, forcing shelter-in-place regulations, Addison’s classes switched to remote instruction through Zoom, so her mother, Julie, found the need for installing a dance surface in their home garage that would allow Addison to continue her hours-long practice sessions without harming her body.

After much research on home dance floor systems, Julie opted to use Greatmats Sports Plus Designer Foam Tiles to soften the existing concrete surface and then finish with a layer of Rosco marley.



“The foam tiles from Greatmats don’t require an additional layer beneath them, yet they are sturdy and block moisture,” Julie said. “They also work for dancers who do pointe work when used in combination with the Rosco marley top. During pointe, my daughter needs something firm with a very slight give, and the foam tiles and Rosco marley have worked out really well.”



Addison says the floor feels like her regular studio dance floor, noting it’s “smooth without being slippery.”

Julie says Addison is loving her new garage dance studio.

“She has used it every day, and with a safer surface to practice on, she’s been taking additional dance and strength-training classes outside of her regular classes,” Julie said.
