Comparing Black and Clear Alturnamats Ground Protection Mats in Direct Sunlight - Temperature Test

Date Published: 10-20 - 2022

If you're using ground protection mats to cover a manicured lawn, yard, sports field and any other space with real grass, it's important to consider the effect direct sunlight can have on the temperature of the mats. This also impacts how long you can safely leave the mats installed without burning the grass below.

We conducted an unofficial temperature test of the both black and clear Alturnamats brand ground protection mats on a sunny 81 degree in Milltown, Wisconsin by leaving samples of each mat in the direct sun for just over 4 hours.

Then we tested the surface temperature of the mats using a infrared thermometer and found a 16-degree temperature difference between the two colors. The black mat heated up roughly 30 degrees more than the air temperature while the clear mat only increased its surface temp by 14 degrees.

If you plan to cover natural grass for a long period of time, the clear mats are the clear favorite to reduce the risk of burning the grass.
