How to Measure For Gym Wall Padding Cutouts
If you are going to install school gym padding on an entire wall, start measuring from the corner to the nearest side of the cutout and from the corner to the far side of the cutout. If you are going to do a custom install with padding on a section of a wall, mark the spot where the padding starts and stops, and measure from the nearest edge of the padding to the cutout and from the nearest edge of the padding to the far side of the cutout.
Always measure from the floor to the bottom of the cutout and from the floor up to the top of the cutout.
Record your measurements as you go and note the location of each pad you’re measuring. If you’re working with multiple padding panels that will have cutouts, keeping these measurements clearly labeled will help you to more easily identify which pad needs to go where for a smoother installation.
How to Create Gym Wall Padding Cutouts
You can custom-order gym wall pads with existing cutouts, but you can also make those cutouts yourself. You will need:
- Measuring tape
- Wall pad
- Marker or pen
- Sharp utility knife
- Jigsaw
- Stapler
- Preformed cutout insert
Creating custom cutouts isn’t difficult, but it’s important to be precise with your measurements. The following instructions will guide you through the process.
- Select your wall pad and measure and mark the area to be cut out. Double-check your dimensions and measure twice before making any cuts.
- Cut through the wood backer and foam. Be careful not to cut the vinyl.
- Remove the core where the cutout will be.
- Cut an X into the vinyl square over where the cutout will be.
- Fold back the vinyl flaps of the X and secure them.
- Slide the cutout insert into the front side of the pad.
- Flip over the pad and staple the flaps of the insert to the wood backer.
- Your wall pad is now ready to install.
Extra Advice to Help You With Cutouts
It’s recommended to install your wall padding 3 to 4 inches above the finished floor, so it’s important to plan your padding layout and adjust your cutouts accordingly. If you’re measuring to create your own cutouts, make sure you’re positioning the mats appropriately. If you’re measuring to order wall padding with custom cutouts, make sure to note if you’ve already factored the installation height into your measurements. When ordering padding with custom cutouts, you’ll need to provide the exact dimensions to the Greatmats team or let us know if you have adjusted the cutout location at all. We will leave some wiggle room around the cutout to ensure an easy installation and to account for any inconsistency in the measurements that were provided.
For example, if a typical switch plate is 2.25 inches wide by 3.25 inches high, we’ll make cutouts that are 3 by 5 inches. If you have already measured and included a space buffer around the object, please inform your Greatmats representative of that, so we don’t add an extra space buffer.
