Sink or Float Rubber, EVA Foam, PVC and Polypropylene Flooring Materials

Date Published: 08-09 - 2022

Have you ever wondered if waterproof flooring floats or sinks when submerged in water? Just for fun, we tested a variety of flooring tiles to find out the answer to that question.

Included in the test were floor tiles made of EVA foam, Rubber, Polypropylene Plastic and PVC plastic. Some tiles were solid and others, perforated. The results were consistent across the same material type, regardless of the design of the tile.

Of all of the materials previously mentioned, PVC flooring tiles were the only ones to sink. The rate at which they sank however was dependent upon the design and how the tiles hit the water.

All other materials floated, and EVA foam was the most resistant to submersion.
