Do Rubber Playground Tiles Get Hot - Blue Sky Tiles Direct Sun Test

Date Published: 09-14 - 2022

We often get questions about whether rubber playground tiles get hot. The quick answer is yes, but there's more to it. Color, thickness and density all play a role in how much a playground tile will heat up.

To demonstrate this, we tested several colors of the 2.75 inch thick Blue Sky Rubber Playground Tiles. In this unofficial test, we left the rubber playground pavers in direct sun for just over 4 hours on an 83 degree Wisconsin day. The colors tested were Black, Brown, Tan and Red, and we found the maximum temperatures recorded for these tiles after 4 hours in the direct sun ranged from around 136 degrees to 156 degrees Fahrenheit.

Tan tiles were the coolest and black tiles, the hottest.

With that being said, you can help keep your playground cooler by making sure there is shade available or installing light colored tiles.

If your playground surface gets too warm for comfort, simply hose them down with water.
