Greatmats offers grappling mats of varying sizes, thicknesses, densities, materials and surface textures. Today we’ll focus on Greatmats three most popular tatami textured grappling mats - Grappling MMA Mats 1x1 meter, Judo Mats Tatami 1x2 meter, and Gmats Roll Out Mats 5x10 ft.

Each of these mats features a different form of foam core. Our Grappling MMA puzzle mats are made of a high density EVA foam. Roll Out Mats offer a cross-linked polyethylene foam core with vinyl surface bonded to the top. Both of those a closed-cell foams. Traditional Judo Mats have a polyurethane core completely covered in vinyl and a rubber anti-skid bottom.

Without the need for a separate surface material, the EVA grappling mats are able to be double colored and reversible.

While polyurethane foam by itself is much softer than its EVA and PE counterparts, the rugged vinyl surface makes it feel harder to the touch than the puzzle-style grappling mat. The Roll-out variety is commonly considered the firmest feeling version.

The EVA mats are the easiest on skin as they feature a no-burn tatami texture, molded right into the foam.

Our tatami grappling mats range from 1 ¼ to 1 ⅝ inch thick. As a general rule, the thicker the mat, the better cushion and protection it offers for falls, but hardness and density does play a role in fall protection. The Grappling MMA Mats are the only ones to be tested for critical fall height and has earned a 4 foot fall height rating by the ASTM.

Our Grappling MMA Mats are the smallest at about 3.3x3.3 feet. They connect together tightly using a puzzle style interlocking system and can be easily customized to fit any size or shape of training space by cutting to fit with a sharp utility knife.

Double in size are the Judo Tatami Mats, which are approximately 3.3x6.6 feet. These mats have straight sides and do not connect together. The anti-skid bottom, combined with the weight of the mats help keep them in place. To be absolutely sure they do not shift, the mats should be framed in.

At 5 feet by 10 feet, the rollout mats cover the most area at a time and can be connected together using releasable vinyl tape.

Grappling MMA mats are the lightest weight at about 9 pounds per tile. 5x10 foot roll out mats are next in line at about 30 pounds per mat. 1x2 meter judo tatami mats weight about 42 pounds each.

Both the 1x2 meter Judo Tatami Mats and 5x10 foot rollout mats, grip well to carpeting while the reversible Grappling MMA mats are more likely to slide, especially as smaller island installations.
