Pet Turf Temperature Testing in Direct Sun - Too Hot for Dogs

Date Published: 10-24 - 2022

If you run a dog daycare facility or just have a fenced in backyard where dogs spend a lot of time, you may be aware that artificial turf is growing in popularity for these spaces as you don't get the brown spots or holes from digging that you find with natural grass. Plus there's no need to mow, fertilize or water.

However, there is always a concern about the turf heating up under direct sunlight to a point where it is too hot for dogs or other pets to walk on. With that in mind, we decided to test some of or most popular pet turfs to see which one remained coolest in the direct sun.

The products tested were:

Pet Heaven - https://www.greatmats.com/artificial-turf/pet-area-artificial-turf-pet-heaven.php

This test was conducted on an 81 degree day in Milltown, WI, and surface temperature readings were taken after just over 4 hours with an infrared thermometer. Here are the recorded surface temperatures for each of the tested products after 4 hours.

Artificial Grass Turf UltimatePet - 109.7 degrees Fahrenheit
Pet Heaven Artificial Grass Turf - 115.3 degrees Fahrenheit
Greatmats Pet Turf Value - 115.3 degrees Fahrenheit
Greatmats Pet Turf Pro - 121.8 degrees Fahrenheit
