Kinds of plastic

Rigid polypropylene (PP) makes hard, snap together plastic floor tiles. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) material yields a softer and quieter floor tile often with anti-fatigue benefits. Polyethylene (PE) is used to make our grass protection mats with no break qualities. Plastic flooring tends to be very durable and long lasting. It does not degrade or break down over time. Most plastic flooring tiles are resistant to oils and acids and some offer ultraviolet (UV) resistance for outdoor use. In many cases plastic flooring can provide cushion similar to foam and durability much like rubber while remaining lightweight.

Plastic floor tiles are popular for areas where other, more traditional, flooring materials are not suitable. Soft and rigid plastic floors each have their own unique advantages. Most squares are non-glue down, snap together or modular interlocking tiles of some kind, which makes them great for a do-it-yourself (DIY) flooring project. Many raised modular tiles can be installed over carpeting, grass or wet surfaces.

Polypropylene Flooring

Rigid PP plastic tiles are resistant to chemicals and solvents and can carry large weight loads. The snap together interlocking design allows for installation without the use of adhesive, which makes them ideal for garage and automotive floors. Its strong no-break material also handles the weight of heavy vehicles such as cars and trucks and sometimes even forklifts and other heavy vehicles.

These plastic tiles often feature a raised base that allows you to install them in areas when condensation or other forms of moisture may appear. The raised surface allows for airflow beneath the till, helping prevent the growth of mold or mildew by keeping moisture from becoming trapped under the finished flooring surface.

Polyvinyl Chloride Flooring

PVC tiles tend to be a more comfortable for standing and a quieter floor in general over PP. PVC tiles that feature a raised bottom provide the best ergonomic and anti-fatigue benefits. These tiles, such as the Staylock floor tiles, are often used in ergonomic industrial standing work station environments. Flat-bottomed PVC tiles are most common in warehouse settings. Our Hiddenlock tiles offer an upscale hidden locking design and are some of our most popular flat bottomed locking tiles.

These plastic tiles are so flexible that there are often confused with rubber tiles. In many cases, PVC plastic tiles actually provide significantly more cushion than rubber.

Raised Plastic Flooring

For a damp basement floor, consider our Max Tile or Staylock Tiles. Both of these plastic floor tiles feature a raised under structure which will allow air and water to flow beneath it. These floor tiles can be installed directly over the concrete, for basements that are potentially damp. We do not recommend an underlayment.

Plastic floor tiles are useful for a variety of applications. The type of flooring you choose should depend on your particular needs. Our modular floor tiles are available in popular colors that allow for creative designs. Use the online floor plan designer to easily create complex room layouts, choose product colors and determine quantities needed.

We also offer numerous other forms of raised plastic tiles for outdoor, industrial, athletic or wet areas.

Plastic Athletic Flooring

Plastic floors for home gyms or commercial athletic installations offer versatility. The best plastic flooring option for gym floors is a raised PVC floor tile. These tiles offer cushion and support for jumping and aerobic X activities and are stable for use under exercise equipment. The tiles will support workout equipment without getting indentations like foam tiles would. PVC will provide more cushion for aerobic activities than rubber flooring tiles or rolls. Think of these PVC raised tiles as an in-between type material compared to softer foam tiles and harder rubber flooring tiles.

Plastic Garage Flooring

For a garage floor, homeowners have mainly two options with plastic flooring. Rigid plastic snap together tiles or a softer PVC tile. The rigid plastic tiles feature a raised bottom structure which allows for air and water flow and are available in various top designs including perforated versions. PVC floor tiles tend to be flat bottomed and offer a quieter and softer floor for human traffic and tool work. Some PVC tiles should be sealed to prevent staining from high end automotive tires. Another option is to use black tiles where a vehicle is parked.

Plastic Outdoor Flooring

For outdoor use around pool areas, in playgrounds, or other outside applications, we recommend a perforated tile such as our StayLock Perforated or Patio Outdoor Tile. These tiles are designed to allow drainage for water under the tiles which means the top surface will dry more quickly after a rain. Perforated tiles also tend to stay much cooler than those without perforations, which means less option for tile expansion. Greatmats PVC floor tiles in perforated versions feature UV protection for up to 7 years for exterior use on rooftops, patios, decks and playgrounds.

Additional outdoor tiles include artificial grass tiles, ground protection mats, and tent floor decking tiles for outdoor temporary events. Plastic flooring is waterproof and uniquely suited for outdoor temporary and portable installations.

Hard vs. Soft Plastic Flooring

Plastic floor tiles are made of either hard or soft plastic and are designed for many outdoor, garage and wet area applications. Soft plastic squares are most often a modular flooring for ergonomic, cushion, athletic and potentially wet outdoor areas. Hard or rigid plastic flooring tiles are made of polypropylene material and are used as modular snap together tiles in garage flooring, portable flooring, trade shows and outdoor tent flooring.

Soft PVC tiles provide a more cushioned surface which is appreciated by people who work with tools in their garages and need a softer landing pad in case of drops. PVC also provides more sound dampening qualities than rigid plastic tiles.

Some of our soft plastic tiles are designed to provide ergonomic benefits for people who stand for long periods of time during the work day or for athletes who do aerobic and repetitive cardio training. Unlike foam and rubber products which would slide on carpeting, modular tiles can be installed over carpeting with no movement of the floor tile even during the most aggressive workouts.
