Interlocking Foam Mats and Rubber Mats for Under Swimming Pools

Creating a sturdy surface underneath an above-ground pool is an easier process when you select any of the under pool mat varieties of flooring from Greatmats.

When you want to create a safe surface over which to place a blow-up pool or a larger self-assembled pool, our interlocking foam tiles or rubber tiles, matting, and rolls are available to deliver a durable level of performance while protecting the bottom of the pool from potential tearing.

Size and Shape Options

We offer our indoor pool mat options in a range of sizes and formats. Some sizes and formats are best for smaller inflatable kiddie pools, while others work better for huge above-ground pools.

  • Foam mats: Our interlocking mats are easy to assemble before placing the pool over the top. These tiles are as large as 2x2 feet in size, allowing installers to cover the space quickly.
  • Rubber mats: For those who prefer rubber tiles, we offer many different sizes of interlocking rubber mats, with 3x3 feet being the largest option.
  • Rubber rolls: Rolls of rubber fit nicely underneath a large pool, covering the space quickly. We have rolls that customers can order by the linear foot or in pre-cut sizes like 10 ft, 25 ft, or 50 ft.

The majority of products range in thickness between 1/4 inch and 5/8 inch.

Material Options

Selecting the best under pool mat for your needs requires thinking about the type of material in use.

Foam
Firm foam mats have a lower cost than rubber, yet they still have a nice level of durability and performance.

When the pool’s base layer consists of thin material, using foam underneath will create a soft feeling for the kids as they walk on the bottom of the pool.

Foam is available in an interlocking tile format.

Rubber
We offer rubber rolls and interlocking tiles as an under pool mat.

Rubber is more durable and sturdier than foam. Rubber works especially well in areas where the pool may be atop gravel or ground with hard soil clumps to avoid tears in the thin layer that makes up the bottom of the pool.

Rubber will support the legs of a ladder for a large above-ground pool without denting as well.

Pattern and Texture Options

Because these tiles and rolls will be going underneath the pool, they rarely contain any significant texture pattern molded into the surface of the material. A flat, smooth surface or a minimal texture pattern works nicely underneath a pool.

If the installer is creating an overlap area of the under pool mat that adds a walking or sitting area around the pool, both rubber and foam provide a nice level of traction for people walking in the area, even when splashed water is present.

Common Use Options

When installing an above-ground type of pool in the backyard, finding a smooth space can be a challenge. By installing these flooring mats in the area where you want to place the pool, you will receive a smooth surface that will make using the pool more enjoyable.

The bottom of these pools usually consists of a thin material. If the ground under the pool has small rocks or other sharp objects, it will be uncomfortable for kids with bare feet to step on them. By placing these flooring tiles and rolls under the pool, you will protect the kids' feet from sharp items on the ground.

Installation Options

When installing an under pool mat, start by figuring out the size of the pool. Make sure you have enough flooring to cover the entire space under the pool. For those who want a seating area near the pool, be sure to include this space within your calculation.

For the interlocking tiles of rubber or foam, simply line up the tabs on one tile with the slots on the nearby tile and press them together. These tiles will have a tight fit without the need to add glue to the edges.

For the rolls of rubber, add them to the space where you need coverage. The corners of the roll could curl for a few days after the layout, so you may want to place weight on the edges until they become flat without curling.

After laying out the tiles or rolls, install the pool over the top. The weight of the pool filled with water will help hold the flooring in place.

Cleaning and Maintenance Requirements

Both rubber and foam tiles offer waterproof capabilities, which makes them ideal for use underneath a pool where splashing water will be ever-present.

If you want to clean some of the tiles in the seating area, use a broom to sweep them and remove dry debris. Customers can rinse the tiles or rolls with a garden hose and sprayer as well.

When it’s time to store the swimming pool for the winter, you can disassemble the tiles or roll up the rubber and store the flooring as well. Try to allow everything to dry fully before going into storage.
