Golf Mat and Turf About Products

Golf Mat Buyers Guide

Creating a safe practice area for golfing at home, at a driving range, or a country club golf course often can involve the use of an artificial turf golf mat. By deploying these synthetic grass mats, customers can protect the natural grass area.

Natural turf can suffer significant wear and tear when a golfer practices on it over and over, digging the clubs into the turf. The golf mat can survive repeated practice swings, creating a long-lasting area for practice time.

Size and Shape Options

At Greatmats, we offer a wide range of sizes in golf mat products, allowing customers to create the perfect space for the type of practice they want to do.

Rolls of artificial golf turf are best for creating a faux putting green. These rolls can range from 12 to 15 feet in width, allowing the installer to create a large green in a short amount of time for practicing putting and chipping. Custom lengths are available.

Another option is a pre-cut mat. This is the best option for practicing with your driver or irons. This mat can withstand the repeated strikes with the golf club, giving golfers a safe space to practice with either real golf balls and a catch-net or with practice golf balls.

If you want to practice chipping toward a target, we offer a floating golf mat that you can place in a swimming pool. These mats range from 3x3 feet to 5x5 feet in size.

Material Options

The golf practice surface consists of fake grass that looks like the real thing. The blades of grass often consist of polypropylene plastic, which has flexibility and softness to it that mimics real grass.

These mats may have a foam backing layer that holds the individual blades of faux grass in place, while softening the blow when the golf club makes contact with the mat.

For a putting green, the backing layer will have a firmness to it, helping to give your golf ball a true roll, rather than sinking into a soft foam backing layer. This thin backing layer in the roll of turf will hold the individual blades of poly plastic in place.

Pattern and Texture Options

When selecting a golf mat product for practice, you primarily will only be able to pick a green color. Occasionally, you may find a different color, but the vast majority of rolls of turf made for golf will be green.

The texture of these mats will nearly all be the same, as the polypropylene plastic material’s design will attempt to mimic actual grass. Most products use a pile height of 1/2 or 3/4 inches, although putting green grass may have a shorter pile height.

Common Use Options

These mats work equally well for use at a golf course, at a retail store that sells golf equipment, or at home. Creating a practice area in any of these locations is an easy process with the artificial turf mats or rolls.

At home, customers may order a roll of turf to make a putting green that remains usable at any time of the year. Because home users don’t have the mowing equipment that would allow them to easily create a natural grass putting green, like a golf course maintenance team would have, the artificial grass green is the perfect alternative.

For a retail or commercial location, these mats are ideal to use at a driving range with or without a catch-net. Practice areas using natural grass at the driving range often will have significant damage after sessions. The golf mat will not show damage, creating a place to practice that protects the natural ground.

Installation Options

Installing the individual hitting mats is an easy process. Just drop the mats in the area where you want to use them and begin hitting golf balls. You do not need to attach them to the ground to keep them in place, as the golfer often will be standing on them while hitting.

When attempting to create a putting green using a roll of turf, the installation process is a little trickier. Many customers choose to hire a professional to prepare the subsurface for the putting green to create a firm area that can support the roll of turf.

You often can install the turf over the top of compacted sand or gravel. Some customers like to install it over an asphalt or concrete pad. Installers may need to bury treated wood around the perimeter of the planned golf green for attaching the roll of turf and for holding it in place.

Cleaning and Maintenance Requirements

These mats do not require any special cleaning techniques. Whether installed indoors or outdoors, cleaning them is a pretty easy process.

To remove dry debris, run a vacuum cleaner over the top or make use of a leaf blower. Customers also can rinse the surface of the artificial turf with a garden hose and spray nozzle.

The mats will last longer when you store them indoors when not using them. Allow them to hang and dry if they become damp while using them to hit golf balls.
