Wall Padding, Floor Mats & Soft Play Mats for Therapeutic Spaces

When attempting to create a room that is suitable for children with autism or for children who simply need a break from the classroom, selecting the right sensory room mats is important for a successful installation.

Greatmats offers multiple types of flooring, wall padding, and standalone mats of varying shapes that deliver textures and cushioning to protect and stimulate those using the room.

Size and Shape Options

Our sensory room mats appear in multiple shapes and sizes, depending on the plans for the installation.

We offer floor rolls up to 42 feet in length that cover large or small spaces. They may consist of soft padding that’s ideal for lying on the floor in a calming manner.

Some customers prefer interlocking flooring tile options that are perfect for a DIY job. Such tiles range in size from 1x1 foot to 1x1 meter.

Wall padding is an option for sensory room ideas either at home, in schools, or in care centers. This protects autistic teenage children from harming themselves by crashing into walls. The pads start at about 2x6 feet in size.

Other items that are useful as sensory room mats include equipment like wedge mats or octagon mats that typically appear as gymnastics mats. These mats range in size from 1x2 feet to 6x12 feet.

Material Options

These mats and materials will have a durable design, ensuring they can last when in use in a sensory room.

Pads of all sizes and shapes often consist of a vinyl cover that creates durability. The vinyl protects the cushioned foam on the interior. The vinyl layer also gives the pad its desired shape.

Floors made up of sensory room mats can feature a wide range of materials, all of which are durable. Many of these floor mats consist of firm foam, which has a good mix of durability and cushioning.

Artificial grass rolls and some tiles will consist of flexible plastic, such as PVC, polypropylene, or polyethylene. These materials are comfortable, yet durable.

Carpet tiles with foam backing are another option for a comfortable sensory room floor.

Pattern and Texture Options

Having different textures on the sensory room mats is a desirable option. When students or kids are sitting on the floor in the sensory room, the texture can be an important part of creating the right kind of stimulation.

Some flooring mats contain a textured pattern molded into the surface of the mat. This is usually a subtle texture, such as an orange peel or bump top, so it doesn’t affect the performance of the flooring. Some floors have diamond and cleat patterns that are a little rougher for a greater level of stimulation.

Artificial turf mats and rolls also create an interesting texture that works nicely for a sensory or calming room.

If customers prefer creating a sensory room that features multiple colors, our products are available in bright, bold, or neutral colors to match the desired look for the room.

Common Use Options

These items will appear in a sensory room, helping a child or adult with developmental disabilities or autism to have a calm, safe place to relax as needed. They also help children who need stimulation to improve their fine motor skills.

Sensory rooms are useful in places like schools, homes, libraries, and daycares. By using padding and comfortable materials, kids who struggle to calm down can remain safe from harm.

These sensory room wall pads and floor mats also work for a range of use cases beyond sensory rooms, such as athletic gyms, gymnastics studios, martial arts studios, or home gyms.

Installation Options

For customers who would like to be able to install these sensory mats on their own, the majority of our products are easy to install.

With interlocking tiles for flooring, just connect the slots and tabs on adjacent tiles. You should not need glue to secure most of these tiles to the floor, as they work best in a dry-lay installation.

Rolls of padding or artificial turf simply roll into place for an easy installation. Some installers use two-sided vinyl tape to secure the rolls to the floor, but most work well with a dry-lay installation.

Standalone mats, such as octagonal and wedge mats, are meant to be portable, so do not use adhesive on them.

Cleaning and Maintenance Requirements

The majority of sensory room mats will be easy to clean. This is important in this type of room, where students may sit on the floor regularly.

Removing dry debris from the floor is an important process to avoid soiling and staining. A gentle vacuum cleaner is a good way to start the cleaning process, although a broom can work well too.

To wash and disinfect these floors, many of the flooring materials will tolerate a neutral pH cleaner applied with a mop. However, before washing or mopping these floors, you should always read the maintenance and cleaning instructions for the floors to ensure you are using a safe cleaning product.
