The right flooring for basement environments can transform the space into attractive and functional living area. Greatmats basement floors can add warmth, color and comfort to areas that need a finished flooring surface. Many of our basement flooring tiles can be used in conjunction with in-floor heat. Most our tiles for basement rooms are designed for use directly over concrete or other hard, flat surfaces.
To determine what type of flooring is best for your home basement, ask yourself a few questions.
1. How will the space be used?
2. Will it be used for a home gym?
3. Will it be used for a kid's play area or family room?
4. Or will it be used for a variety of purposes?
5. Are their moisture concerns?
6. How much space am I looking to cover?
7. How likely is it that I will need to remove the floor or access the subfloor?
8. Am I looking to soften my basement floor?
9. Am I looking for more color in my basement or a more natural look?
10. Will I be installing this myself?
Knowing your needs will help you choose the right flooring that best fits your application.
Rubber Flooring for Basement Spaces
Rubber basement flooring is one of the most popular solutions to covering cold, hard concrete floors. This material can come in many different forms, including tiles, rolls and mats and is often made from recycled materials. Rubber floor tiles are the most common, due to their ease of transportation and installation. The 2x2 foot size tiles make it easy for a single person to make it down narrow staircases with the tiles without the need for a second set of muscles. Most of these tiles interlock with each other and do not require adhesives for installation.
The next most popular form of basement flooring rubber is the rubber roll. One of the most economical forms of rubber flooring for basements, this form of flooring also covers large areas with virtually no seams. Be aware rubber rolls are heavy, however, and should be installed by at least two people.
Rubber mats are most commonly used for basements where the intention is to protect the floor from heavy impact in isolated areas such as olympic weight lifting spaces.
Gym Basement Flooring
We offer interlocking foam or rubber basement flooring tiles that are durable and long lasting. These products will protect your subfloors and buffer against the noise associated with gyms and workout rooms. They'll also provide fatigue relief for your body. Both rubber and foam are good sound insulators.
While most of our foam tiles are waterproof, rubber is partially non-absorbent and may allow water to permeate through the flooring if soaked or power washed. While our foam and rubber flooring for basements with flat undersides may trap existing moisture underneath the floor, but can be pulled up easily in the case of moisture condensation or seepage to allow the subfloor and underside of your basement flooring tiles to dry. Once dry, simply push the tiles back in place for a good-as-new basement home gym floor.
Rubber is the primary flooring choice for most residential home gym floors. Rubber material is firm and durable and is an excellent choice for under exercise equipment and for home weight room floors and free weight areas. The recycled rubber basement flooring material is available from 1/4 inch thick up to 1 inch thick. The thickness of the rubber directly correlates with the level of protection it will provide for your subfloor, especially with rubbers of the same density. Thicker rubber basement flooring will absorb more impact and last longer than the thinner options.
We offer rubber flooring for basements in tile, mat and rolled rubber forms. While rolled rubber will always come with straight edges, rubber interlocking tiles and mats are also available. All of our rubber basement flooring options are able to be installed by Do-it-yourselfers, but rubber tiles will be much easier to install by smaller crews as tiles are much smaller, lighter and more manageable.
We offer full color rubber basement floor tiles, all black and black with colored flecks in the mix. Interlocking rubber tiles are easy to handle and require no tape or glue for installation. Rolled rubber flooring can be more economical, especially for larger areas, and is available in roll lengths of 10 feet and longer. Greatmats also offers rubber underlayment rolls for your basement gym.
Interlocking rubber basement flooring is a great option for a home gym. The tiles are simple to install and protect both the concrete and exercise equipment. Because they are interlocking, they require no adhesive to install and can be easily taken up and moved. These tiles also reduce the amount of wasted material, when compared to its rolled rubber cousin, for wall-to-wall installations.
These tiles generally have the look of jigsaw puzzle pieces and interlock much the same way. Some offer universal interlocking designs which allow you to install the basement tiles facing any direction. Other interlocking rubber puzzle mats will have directional arrows on the underside to guide you.
Rolled rubber flooring is the least expensive rubber basement flooring option in most cases. Like rubber tiles, it also protects floors and exercise equipment. It is often found in larger installations such as commercial gyms, and can also be installed for home basement floors. Rolled rubber ships via freight delivery, except for our 4x10 feet x 1/4 inch thick rolls. As a precautionary measure, we recommend a tape down installation with this product. Adhesive is also an option for permanent installations, especially in larger areas.
The 100-percent recycled and recyclable rubber materials are much harder, firmer and heavier than foam options. They also last a lot longer than foam. Should you be dropping weights in your basement gym, the thicker the rubber flooring the better to protect your subfloor. For those purposes, we recommend at least a 3/4-inch thickness.
Foam Gym Basement Flooring
Foam basement gym flooringis extremely lightweight and easy to install, even by a single person. Foam provides superior cushion and will help protect your bones and joints during workouts. While we do offer foam rolls, that type of flooring is designed to add extra cushion under another form of flooring and should not be used alone. Our interlocking foam tiles, however, can be used alone and are as simple to install as locking puzzle pieces together.
Foam basement gym flooring is an excellent choice for aerobic or floor exercises. Foam will indent when heavy objects are placed in it and will likely puncture should something sharp be dropped on the floor. Most indents well disappear in the same amount of time it took for them to form, but some may be permanent, depending on how heavy the object is and how long it sits on the soft floor.
Plastic Basement Gym Flooring
If rubber or foam aren't your thing, snap together PVC plastic gym floor tiles, such as StayLock Bump Top or StayLock Orange Peel tiles may be just what you're looking for. These tiles hit the middle ground between foam and rubber for both durability and cushion. Plus they add a raised base to prevent moisture from being trapped beneath your basement gym floor.
The PVC material in StayLock Tiles is very flexible and lightweight. Black tiles are made from recycled PVC material and can be recycled again at the end of its useful life. These tiles carry a five-year warranty where most foam products are guaranteed for 1 year, and most rubber products are expected to last for decades.
Kids Play Room Basement Flooring
Foam basement flooringis both economical and helps parents breathe easier about the safety of their children. Commonly used in creating soft rooms for children with special conditions, such as epilepsy, this form of basement flooring will help prevent or lessen the severity of injuries due to slips, trips, falls or seizures. Several of our foam and plastic flooring tiles even feature fall height ratings. EVA foam mats can turn any hard, cold concrete floor into a safe and soft kids play area.
Foam basement tiles come in a variety of thicknesses, colors and surface textures. These tiles are warm and comfortable under foot and can add color and design to any home basement. With numerous colors of interlocking tiles, it is easy to create a floor pattern that will match the rest of your room decor. Foam is safe, soft and easy to install. Closed cell foam will not absorb water.
A few of our PVC tiles also provide excellent cushion and limited fall height protection for areas where children will be active. These tiles also offer more durability against sharp or heavy objects. Our line of 1x1 foot StayLock Tiles is a good place to start if plastic flooring is a consideration. These tiles come in a variety of surface options, are waterproof and flexible.
Family Area Basement Flooring
Carpeted basement flooring options include a modular snap-together carpet tile and an interlocking carpet top, foam-backed floor tile. Both of these options offer a carpeted and comfortable flooring surface with easy installation.
For basement floors with moisture issues, consider a flooring product that resists moisture and is non-absorbent. Snap together raised carpet tiles for basement floors are a good option for dampness since they keep the carpeting off the wet floor and allow air to flow underneath it. This allows the floor to dry and prevent the growth of mold and mildew. Raised floor tiles feature a base system that elevates the tile off the basement floor. This allows for air to move under the finished flooring surface without the need for lifting up the flooring.
A great carpeted raised flooring option is our Carpet Tile Home MaxBase. This flooring option features an interlocking durable plastic base with a ribbed carpet top surface. Each tile weighs just one pound and covers one square foot. Carpet Tile Home basement tiles are half inch thick.
Puzzle style interlocking carpet tiles with foam backing offer instant cushion and comfort and are typically offered with a lower price tag than its raised floor counterpart. Should these tiles become wet, it is advised that you remove the tiles and take them outside to dry. Once all surfaces are dry, simply re-install the tiles.
Our Royal interlocking carpet tiles product provides a soft and warm flooring solution for your basement and are non-water absorbent. A thick, foam bottom provides excellent comfort and fatigue relief on hard basement floors. Similar to standard foam flooring tiles, if these carpet tiles get wet, they are easy to remove, dry and re-install. Carpet top foam tiles provide warmth, comfort and a great appearance. These tiles are available in several designer colors.
A non-carpeted raised flooring tile solution that looks great and provides excellent durability is our Max Tile. These tiles easily snap together to create a permanent or temporary flooring solution. This vinyl-topped flooring option can be cut to fit for a wall-to-wall installation. Max Tiles are available in several popular designs, including wood grain and stone looks. You can choose from light oak, dark oak, maple plank, cherry plank, walnut plank, slate or stone. Max Tile is a popular, higher-end flooring solution for basements. It is durable for furniture use, and will last for many years.
For a more natural look, you may want to consider our luxury vinyl tiles or other laminates, which are available in wood grain, stone and cork designs as well as others.
Basement Den or Workshop Flooring
Many people enjoy using their basement as a heated workshop or den. For these situations, we recommend using one of our raised PVC floors that provide fatigue relief and an easy to clean surface. Our StayLock modular basement flooring tiles are waterproof, resistant to most acids and oils, and are available in three different surfaces, bump top, orange peel and perforated. This durable basement workshop flooring option has an expected life span of 20 years and features a 5-year warranty.
Basement Flooring Installation
When creating an island installation inside of a larger room, consider a flooring product for your basement that has a border option. Many of our flooring options, such as Max Tile, include ramped or straight edge borders that provide for a finished look to your floor. When installing flooring wall-to-wall, start the installation in one corner of the room that shares two longer walls, or start in the center of the room and cut the tiles to fit wall to wall.
Installation of basement floor tiles is generally an easy, do-it-yourself project. Interlocking and snap together tiles are quick to install and easy to take up if needed. Cleaning of basement flooring is similar to other household residential floors. Always use a neutral pH floor cleaner when cleaning rubber flooring material.
