Consider basement flooring to:

  1. Create a comfortable area for your family to relax
  2. Transform your basement floor into a home gym floor
  3. Create a kids playroom
  4. Provide insulation from the cold of a concrete basement floor
  5. Make the most of an unused space
  6. Instantly make your basement more attractive and versatile, at an affordable cost
When you buy the right flooring for basements, you can transform your basement into an attractive and functional living area, getting more use out of the space. Greatmats basement flooring adds warmth, color, and comfort to areas that need a finished flooring surface.

Our flooring options are designed to work with the existing conditions in your basement. Many of our basement flooring tiles can be used in conjunction with in-floor heat. We have many options which are moisture resistant, too. Most of our tiles are designed to be used directly over concrete or other hard, flat surfaces. If your basement has a dirt floor, we can help in that department as well - just call to speak with a basement flooring expert.

Greatmats is proud to offer more than 350 flooring options specifically designed with qualities, such as moisture resistance and insulation against cold, that are so important in basement settings. Your cold, dingy, dark basement will be a thing of the past when you invest in Greatmats basement floor tiles.

Types of Flooring for Basements

You will find that basement flooring is available in rolls, tiles and mats. Flooring is made of a wide variety of materials, including plastic, rubber, foam, carpet, vinyl, and cork, each of which are designed to handle the specific challenges of basement environments. Some basement floors are water resistant or waterproof, while others have a raised flooring feature to allow air to circulate beneath the floors. Nearly all of our basement flooring features a modular design that can be removed and reinstalled easily.

How to determine what type of basement flooring is best.

  1. How will the space be used? Will the space be a home gym, a kids play area, or a family room?
  2. Are there moisture concerns in your basement?
  3. How much space do you need the flooring to cover?
  4. Is it likely that you will need to remove the floor or access the subfloor in the future?
  5. Are you looking for a softer surface to help absorb shock?
  6. Do you want a colorful floor, or a floor with a more natural appearance?
  7. Will you be installing the flooring yourself?

Knowing your needs will help you choose the right flooring that best fits your application.

Let's take a look at some of our most popular types of basement floors.

Rubber Basement Flooring

Rubber basement flooring is one of the most popular solutions to covering cold, hard concrete floors, and it can serve a variety of purposes. It is often made from recycled materials, so you can feel good about your choice to use rubber flooring. You may want to go with a rubber flooring option if you need a multi-purpose space, or if you're establishing a gym area or work space.

Rubber flooring for basements comes in different forms, including flooring tiles, rolls and mats. Rubber floor tiles are the most popular option, since they are easy to transport and install. A single person can safely carry the 2x2 foot tiles down narrow staircases for easy home installation. Most of the rubber tiles interlock, so you usually won't need adhesives.

Rubber rolls also make popular rubber basement flooring options. These rolls are one of the most economical forms of rubber flooring for basements. Rolls also quickly cover large areas with virtually no seams. You should be aware that the rolls are heavy, though, and installation will most likely require at least two people.

Many people also use thick rubber mats in basements when they want to protect the floor from heavy impact. Mats are popular choices in areas such as weight lifting spaces.

Gym Basement Flooring

When transforming your basement into a gym, you'll have a number of suitable flooring options. You will want to choose a product with the following qualities in mind:

  1. Is the product suitable for planned activities, such as weight lifting or aerobics?
  2. How forgiving is the surface, if you'll be doing activities like sit-ups or push-ups?
  3. Does the flooring offer good sound insulation properties?

Rubber Gym Flooring
Rubber is the primary choice for most residential gym floors. Rubber is firm and durable, and makes a great choice for use underneath exercise equipment and for weight room machine and free weight areas. Rubber is also non-absorbent, making for easy cleanup.

One of the greatest benefits to rubber is its ability to protect your underlying basement floor. Recycled rubber basement flooring is available in thicknesses ranging from 1/4 inch all the way up to 1 inch.

Generally speaking, thicker rubber flooring offers your floor greater protection, especially when comparing two rubber flooring options with the same densities. Thicker flooring absorbs more impact and is more durable than the thinner options.

When you're designing a home gym that will see heavy activity, like weight lifting, rubber flooring may be a great investment. Our 100-percent recycled rubber flooring options are harder, firmer and heavier than similar flooring made from foam. The rubber flooring lasts a lot longer than foam. If you'll be dropping weights in your gym, the thicker rubber flooring better protects your subfloor.

Our EVA foam tiles are completely waterproof as are our re-vulcanized rubber products.

Non-vulcanized rubber is partially non-absorbent. It is possible for water to permeate through the flooring if the floors are soaked or power washed.

Foam and rubber flooring for basements with flat undersides may trap existing moisture underneath the floor, but they can be pulled up easily in the case of moisture condensation or seepage to allow the subfloor and underside of your basement flooring tiles to dry. Once dry, simply push the tiles back in place for a good-as-new basement home gym floor. We also offer basement flooring with raised bases to prevent moisture from becoming trapped.

You may want to consider rubber gym flooring if:

  1. You're looking for an economical flooring option
  2. You need a flooring that provides shock absorption, such as for use in a weight room
  3. You need to protect your underlying basement flooring from wear and tear

We offer rubber flooring for basements in tile, mat and rolled rubber forms. While rolled rubber will always come with straight edges, rubber interlocking tiles and mats are also available - and lock tightly together so you don't have to worry about tile edges working their way up.

All of our rubber basement flooring options are able to be installed by do-it-yourselfers. However, keep in mind that rubber tiles are easier for a single person to install because they're smaller, lighter, and more manageable than rubber rolls or large rubber mats are.

Interlocking Rubber Tiles
Interlocking rubber basement flooring is a great option for a home gym. The tiles are simple to install and protect both the concrete and exercise equipment. Because the tiles interlock, installation requires no adhesive. Additionally, you can easily take up the tiles and move them in the future whether you need to clean beneath them or just feel like relocating your home gym. Compared to rolled rubber, interlocking rubber tiles also reduce the amount of wasted material for wall-to-wall installations, ensuring you get the most bang for your buck.

Installing interlocking tiles is easy. Most of the tiles have the look of jigsaw puzzle pieces, and interlock much the same way. Some tiles feature universal interlocking designs, so you can install them facing any direction. Other tiles will have directional arrows on their underside to guide you on proper installation.

Our rubber basement floor tiles are full color, with all black and black with colored flecks options available. You can choose the exact appearance that you want for your home gym.

You may want to consider rubber interlocking flooring tiles if:

  1. You're doing a wall-to-wall installation in a smaller area
  2. You'll be handling your basement gym floor's installation on your own
  3. You may want to remove or move your gym flooring in the future

Rolled Rubber Flooring
While interlocking tiles tend to be easier to install, rolled rubber flooring can be a more economical option, especially when installed in large areas. Rolled rubber is available in lengths of 10 feet and longer, and we also offer rubber underlayment rolls for your basement gym. It's a popular choice for larger installations, such as in commercial gyms, but is also a great choice for home basement floors.

When installing rolled rubber, we recommend a tape down installation. Adhesive is also an option for permanent installations, especially in larger areas.

Rolled rubber ships via freight delivery, except for our 4x10 feet x 1/4 inch thick rolls.

Foam Gym Basement Flooring
Foam basement gym flooring is lightweight and extremely easy to install. Foam provides a softer surface with more cushion than rubber flooring, and helps to protect your bones and joints during workouts. Our interlocking foam basement tiles are as simple and easy to install as locking puzzle pieces together.

We also offer foam rolls, but these are designed to provide extra cushion under another type of flooring. The foam rolls should not be used alone.

Foam basement gym flooring is a great choice if you'll be doing aerobics or floor exercises. Foam does indent if heavy objects are placed on it, and it can be punctured if something sharp is dropped on the floor. Most indents will disappear, but if a substantially heavy object is dropped or placed on the foam for a long period of time, the indent may become permanent.

Foam basement flooring is ideal when:

  1. You're looking for a softer, more forgiving flooring option
  2. You'll be focusing on activities like aerobics or floor work
  3. You don't have any heavy gym equipment that will need to sit on the floor
  4. You aren't going to be lifting heavy weights
  5. You're looking for a floor which is simple and easy to install

Plastic Basement Gym Flooring
If you're looking for something a little more forgiving than rubber but a little firmer than foam, plastic basement gym flooring is a great middle ground - especially flexible PVC flooring tiles. Snap together PVC plastic gym floor tiles, such as StayLock Bump Top or StayLock Orange Peel tiles, are durable yet provide more cushion than rubber. These basement floor tiles feature a raised base which prevents moisture from becoming trapped beneath the floor. This is particularly advantageous for basements where leaks are possible.

The PVC StayLock Tiles are both flexible and lightweight. The black tiles are made from recycled PVC material, and the tiles can even be recycled again at the end of their usable life. With a 5-year warranty, you can buy PVC StayLock Tiles with confidence (most foam tiles are guaranteed for one year).

Consider PVC flooring tiles if:

  1. You need something more durable than foam but with more cushion than rubber
  2. Your basement floors may be subjected to leaks or moisture buildup

Kids Playroom Basement Flooring

Foam basement flooring converts your basement floors into a soft and forgiving play area for children. Foam flooring is frequently used to create soft rooms for children with special conditions, such as epilepsy. Now, it is available for use in your very own basement to keep your kids safe. This flooring helps to prevent or lessen the severity of injuries due to slips, trips, falls or even seizures. Several of our foam and plastic flooring tiles even feature fall height ratings. Quickly turn any hard, cold, concrete basement floors into a safe and soft kids play area.

Foam basement tiles are available in a variety of thicknesses, and are warm and comfortable to stand on. Interlocking foam tiles come in numerous colors, so you can quickly brighten up your basement or even create a fun pattern.

Closed cell foams such as EVA and Polyethylene foams will not absorb water.

Some of our PVC tiles also offer excellent cushioning properties and limited fall height protection. PVC tiles generally offer more durability against sharp or heavy objects. If you're interested in plastic flooring for a play area, our line of 1x1 foot StayLock Tiles is a good place to start. These tiles are waterproof and flexible, and are available with many different surface options.

When choosing the right flooring for a basement play area, look for a flooring that:

  1. Offers a soft, safe play surface
  2. Provides fall height protection
  3. Is easy to install

Family Area Basement Flooring

Flooring for basements includes many practical options suitable for family areas. If you're looking for a carpeted flooring, consider our modular snap-together carpet tile and our interlocking carpet top, foam-backed floor tiles. These options give you a comfortable carpeted surface but are incredibly easy to install.

If your basement has moisture issues, then you will want a non-absorbent product that resists moisture. You can still have that carpet finish if you opt for our snap together raised carpet tiles. These tiles keep the carpeting raised up off the damp floor, allowing air to flow beneath the tiles to help promote drying and prevent mold and mildew growth. Because raised floor tiles have this unique base system, there's no need to lift the floor up to allow the base to dry in most situations.

The Basement Carpet Tile Raised Squares are a great raised flooring option. This raised flooring tile features an interlocking durable plastic base with a ribbed carpet top surface. Each tile weighs just one pound and covers one square foot. These raised carpet basement tile squares are a half inch thick.

If you have a basement that has less persistent moisture problems, then our puzzle style interlocking carpet tiles with foam backing could work for you. These tiles offer instant cushion and comfort and are typically offered with a lower price tag than their raised floor counterpart. Should these tiles become wet, it is advised that you remove the tiles and take them outside to dry. Once all surfaces are dry, simply re-install the tiles.

Our Royal Interlocking Carpet Tiles provide a soft and warm flooring solution for your basement and are non-water absorbent. A thick, foam bottom provides excellent comfort and fatigue relief on hard basement floors. Similar to standard foam flooring tiles, if these carpet tiles get wet, they are easy to remove, dry and re-install. Carpet top foam tiles provide warmth, comfort and a great appearance. These tiles are available in several designer colors.

Our Max Tile is a non-carpeted raised flooring tile solution that looks great and is highly durable. These tiles easily snap together to create a permanent or temporary flooring solution, and can be cut to fit for a wall-to-wall installation. Max Tiles are available in several popular designs, including wood grain and stone looks. Max Tile is a popular, higher-end flooring solution for basements. It is durable for furniture use, and will last for many years even in family areas that receive heavy traffic.

For a more natural look, you may want to consider our luxury vinyl tiles or other laminates, which are available in wood grain, stone and cork designs as well as others.

When choosing the right flooring for your basement family area, consider the following factors:

  1. Does your basement have moisture issues?
  2. Are you looking for a carpeted or non-carpeted surface?
  3. Will you be performing a wall-to-wall installation?
  4. How much traffic will the area receive?

Basement Den or Workshop Flooring

Many people choose to turn their basements into heated workshops or dens. For such situations, we recommend using one of our raised PVC floors. These durable floors provide excellent fatigue relief, and their surfaces are easy to clean.

Our StayLock modular basement flooring tiles are waterproof, resistant to most acids and oils, and are available in three different surfaces: bump top, orange peel and perforated. This durable basement workshop flooring option has an expected life span of 20 years and features a 5-year warranty.

Basement Flooring Installation

Installing basement floor tiles is generally an easy, do-it-yourself project. Interlocking and snap together tiles are quick to install and easy to take up if needed.

If you're creating an island installation inside a larger room, then consider using a product that includes a border option for a clean, attractive finish. Many of our flooring options, such as Max Tile or StayLock Tiles, include ramped or straight edge border options that provide for a finished look to your floor. When installing flooring wall-to-wall, start the installation in one corner of the room that shares two longer walls, or start in the center of the room and cut the tiles to fit wall to wall - depending on the style of interlocks.

The Greatmats online Pro Floor Planner room designer is a convenient and easy way to create a basement room layout to scale. With the Pro Floor Planner, simply:
